Postpartum Depression

what did you do when you realized you had PPD/PPA

I have been feeling for a while like I may have some anxiety problems. I constantly feel huge surges of adrenaline with racing heartrate and shortness of breath almost every time my baby cries or even wakes up happy from a nap. I am kept up at night with the anxiety that my baby might wake up. (She has slept through the night since she was 4 weeks old.) I keep thinking it will go away but it hasn't. I have never had thoughts of harming her or anything like that so I didn't think it could be PPD. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I call my Dr? Did you call your OB or your Primary care Physcian if you thought you had PPD/PPA? TIA

Re: what did you do when you realized you had PPD/PPA

  • Call your OB and tell them that you are struggling with PPA and would like to see someone.  (I would be leery of anyone prescribing you PPA or PPD meds without seeing you first.)

My PPD/PPA started the afternoon we came home from the hospital.  My docs made me wait a couple of (long) weeks before putting me on meds to make sure that it was PPD and not baby blues.  Once on meds, things got progressively better.  It still took time for the meds to work, but I felt better knowing that I was doing something about it.

I hope that you are able to be seen soon and that you are able to find relief from the anxiety that you are feeling.  Please keep us posted!

  • I would talk to your Ob.

FYI - I never thought of harming DD either (that would be more like PPPsychosis than PPD or PPA).

    GL!
  • That's exactly how I felt about 3-4 weeks after my son was born.  I was never sad, didn't cry or have ANY thoughts of harming him or myself, but was having nausea, my heartbeat raced, I couldn't sleep and was constantly waiting for him to wake up.  Night was especially bad. By the end of the day, I was just a anxious wreck.  I called my OBGYN and she prescribed me Lexapro as well as referred me to a therapist which I saw about half a dozen times.  It's amazing how much better I feel 4 weeks later!  I would definately call your OBGYN, explain to her how you're feeling and she'll know what to do.  They deal with this every day.  It will get better!  Send me a message if you have any other questions!
  • Call your OB. It is nothing they haven't heard before. I was so embarrassed to admit that I had it, but it really was not new to them.
  • I called my OB. PPD and PPA can occur anytime within the first year after birth and most OBs recognize and treat them both. I had really bad anxiety about many things, if it's bad enough that it's interuppting your sleep then I would suggest calling your OB. Good luck to you :)
