Another flying question- how to take frozen milk

We are flying with DS soon and I need to take about two feedings worth of frozen milk with us. Has anyone done this before and if so what is the best way to transport it? Dry ice? Thanks for your help!

Re: Another flying question- how to take frozen milk

  • If you are only taking a little bit (which 2 feedings I'm thinking is probably like 10 ounces, which isn't much), I would take fresh chilled, not frozen.  Just take it in a cooler with an icepak and you will be fine.  I have transported 60+ ounces this way on the plane.  The cooler can be carried on with you, you just need to declare it to the TSA people.

Let me know if you need more information.

  • How long can I keep it chilled before I need to use it?  Isn't it different than time in an actual fridge?

We are flying out on a Friday morning and we won't need the extra milk until Monday.  The pumps from Friday to Monday should provide at least one if not two feedings and we will have a fridge where I can store it in the meantime (I was taking two feedings worth just in case).  I usually just pump out each side once it seems fairly empty in the mornings (I to do this daily since I have to pump out before I run 3-4 mornings a week and I'm trying to be consistent on the off days).  As a side, I don't do a ton of pumping because I SAH and don't need a huge freezer stash so when I do pump it's just typically an extra 2 ozs a day.

Would it be better or easier to modify my pumping a little leading up to when we leave and pump more while I'm there?  Or if it can stay chilled for a few days do that leading up to when we leave?

    Thanks for the info/advice!

  • Pumped milk can stay in the fridge for a week, and stay in an cooler with a cold ice pack for 24 hours.  I would try to pump on Wednesday and Thursday those 2 feedings you need.  Leave them in the fridge, then pack them in your cooler (I use the one that came with my PISA) right before leaving for the airport.  As soon as you get to your destination put the milk back in the fridge.  You can do the same thing coming home with any milk you have left over.  Just give your LO the oldest milk first that way you aren't bringing home week old milk.  When you get home you can put this milk in with your freezer stash.  I normally label the bags that the milk is from the trip *just in case* it seems iffy when I defrost it for DS.
  • I will plan on that!  Thanks again!
