Success after IF

Why did your IVF work?

Broad question, I know. But everyone has in their head, or in their medical records, some reasons why their IVF was a success.

Why do you think the one that worked, WORKED?

Re: Why did your IVF work?

  • Because I went to an excellent doctor who had an excellent lab (this is key) with a proven track record.
  • Loading the player...
  • Because it bypassed my $hitty tube and DH's sleepy swimmers.

Now this surprise pregnancy?  I have no idea why that worked.

  • I was on a typical Long Lupron protocol my first cycle (Lupron, Follistim & Ovidrel trigger) and I produced quite a few eggs but apparently they weren't too mature.  So, my second cycle my RE upped the Follistim dosage and added Menopur to the mix.  I seemed to produce fewer eggs, however they must've been more mature than the previous ones.  I even transferred two instead of three the second time around.

  • Oh Huney, if i knew that one..... I know what we did different from the other ones, but I don't know what the magic actually turned out to be.

With our last IVF, we added Lovenox and Folic Acid to the Lupron, Menopur, Bravelle, baby aspirin, and PNVs we were already doing. Not sure what did it, but something changed. It was also the only fresh done after my lap to remove the endo we didn't know about and we transferred 3 blasts, instead of 2.

     Good luck to you!

  • I don't really know why the RE think it worked, but I think it worked for many reasons.  My cycle was perfect.  I had 28 eggs retrieved, 22 mature and all fertilized with ICSI.  They transferred 2 high quality blasts (sorry I forget the grade.)  I think the quality of our embryos is what did it.  We also have 10 very good frozen embryos.  We are doing a FET in May.  I have high hopes of it working!  I hope, I hope!

I hope and pray this is it for you!

This and because we finally got lucky enough to have an embryo that wanted to stick around for more than 6-9 weeks.

This was a big factor, I think, for me as well.  And, I think I finally fell on the right side of the numbers game - 40 eggs, 24 embroys, 3 IVFs -  finally gave me the golden egg.

  • Acupuncture, diet changes, and DH quitting smoking.

Our 2nd cycle was a complete turn around and all of my meds were exactly the same.

  • I honestly believe the info we learned from injectible IUIs (4 with 1 chemical pgcy) gave my RE all the background on both of us.  Had we just done IVF without any of this knowledge, long lupron it would have failed.  I would not have responded.  We were originally only MFI.

So I am a big proponent of having at least 1 injectible cycle before IVF so that the doc can see how you respond.  I am a poor responder, super fast stimmer, get a lead follie way to fast... and have crappy eggs.

  • Mine worked because.......

    1. I did the Depot Lupron treatment for 2 months to give my uterus the "sticky tape" it needed.

    2. We had the best lab in the country to grow our embryos, so we had more to work with than we would have (this really just helped for the future so we only have to do FET's).

    3. CGH testing - we knew we were transferring viable embryos. The 2 we transferred would not have been the 2 otherwise. We would have transferred one that was NOT viable and one that ended up not sticking. Our little boy would have been in the second batch for transfer.

This also! I don't really know..I did 3 back to back cycles starting in June 09 and by the 3nd one I was sort of in a bad place and kind of went into thinking that nothing would work. Honeslty I think that  why it actully worked for me. I also started exercising again after my failed FET ands my  worked out all the way up until I started stimming.

Finally, I also really think it was my doctor. It wasn't my actual RE (she was actually out on maternity leave! Ironic) who did the transfer it was the founder of my clinic. He did both my retrieval and transfer I think that because he truly has the magic touch.

ditto as weemodin and I see the same dr.  ;)

I think being positive helps.  It is hard because IVF is a rollercoaster.  One day you are down, one day you are up....I wouldn't do IVF again after the first time.  The worse part for me were the BCPs - made me a crazy person. (or more of one)

  • God. plain & simple- because Lord only knows why the first 3 didn't.
  • #5 worked.  Why it worked?

    We went to Cornell.

They did tons of pre-tests and found a thyroid issue.  Even while super super minor, I had to get that taken care of before they'd see me.

    They monitored me SUPER closely.

    We did a 5dt instead of a 3.

To me- those were the major differences between that cycle and the previous 4.

  • Adding menopur gave me more mature eggs this time that last (last time we did Follistim alone).  I am also a firm believer in lab quality being a huge factor in success.

  • Lots of prayers.  But we also did the antagonist protocol second time around instead of long lupron which sucked.  In the 3 months between cycles I changed my diet, exercised more, lost about 15 lbs, took fresh wheatgrass and other supplements for egg quality like CoQ10, L-Arginine, DHEA and did acupuncture on the day of ET and kept going after BFP.  Also ate pineapple core.  All or none of it could have helped, depends on what you believe, I think for us it was a mixture of everything.  We also have a great lab with top embryologists.
  • My obvious answer is prayers. Some may argue that I prayed all along, so what made this one different, so I'll give you another theory!

For our 2nd FET, we thawed 3 embies but decided to only transfer 2. They said they would try to refreeze the 3rd. For our 3rd FET, we thawed the remaining 3, and this is what they looked like:

    image

The big one is the one that was refrozen and thawed a second time successfully. I will obviously never know, but I'm convinced that is the one that stuck. Our little fighter!! Big Smile

Because while my tubes seem okay on the macro level (HSG), I think they don't work so great on the micro level, probably due to endo.  Once we bypassed the crappy tubes, we were in business!  Not to mention I also think we had a great set of docs and an awesome lab.

  • If I knew the answer to that I'd be wealthy.

Even my RE was stunned that it worked..... and floored that 2 stuck (initially).

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

    Yes, this.

I believe in the amazing quality of the lab more than anything else. And I was lucky enough to have rockstar embryos despite being 36.  (The fact that the first thing my RE said when he came in for the transfer was 'You have beautiful embryos!' was a huge relief.)

  • I have no idea.  Our IVF should not have worked, we even talked about converting to an IUI, I had a bad response to the meds and had poor quality embryos.  I think a big factor for us was doing a  2 day transfer.

This, and because (x) I was 27/28 when the eggs were retrieved and had no structural issues, just failure to ovulate and (y) we did ICSI to overcome DH's sperm issues. So all of our problems (no egg released, too few sperm to fertilize by chance) were bypassed

  • I forgot to add that cornell's lab is totally fab and I also did co-culture with my last (and successful) IVF.

  • Wow honestly...I think I was lucky. I had two very nice looking embies on day 3 and everything just aligned with my lining and with the transfer and I really just chalk it up to luck. IVF doesn't work for a lot of people and so there is a part of me that just thinks like in life it's luck of the draw or almost random. I don't think anything was right for me that I haven't seen be right for someone who got a bfn. I wish there was a magic protocol that I could tell of.
  • Our biggest problem was that I have one tube, and IVF bypasses that issue.
  • Because they did AH on the embies.  The embryologist said that the zonas on my embies were so thick they'd have never hatched on their own.

Oh, and the crazy fertility doll that some lady gave to our RE that was sitting on the u/s machine they used during my procedure.  DH made it "dance" over my belly after the transfer.

Oh, again, (sorry) DH and I went out of town for a few days during our stimming and I relaxed for the first time in months.  I think it improved my entire outlook on the process.  Even though I did have to do stim shots in the bathroom of Bristol Motor Speedway.  But it's a nice story now!

  • I switched clinics to a doctor who was more willing to experiment and stop treating me like one of his cows in a herd rather then treat me as an individual. (my first clinic kind of went too much with a general rule book about how all IVFs and next steps should go)
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • My egg quality was WAY better the second time around.  We went from one crappy blast IVF#1 to transferring 2 beauties and freezing 4 in IVF#2.

I don't know it for a fact but I think it was the change in meds (no Lupron this time) and waiting an extra day to retrieve.

Or as my Best Friend jokingly says: "You just tried harder this time".

  • no science in my head here....

because Ethan was the child I was meant to have. And he was conceived in this cycle.

I think it helped to have a top rated embryologist, an excellent transfer, 7 good quality embryos and a great doctor who listened to me, too

  • Mine is easy.  The eggs of a 23 year old instead of a 37-40 year old.
  • Honestly? I have no frikkin' idea.

I think the first one worked because I KNEW it would. No doubt in my mind, the moment I said to the doc, "We're doing IVF!" I knew that it would give me a baby.

Our first FET had a stellar embie with 90% cell survival rate from thaw. It didn't work, but I was also almost sure it wouldn't.

This last one? You can knock me over with a feather -- I don't know why it did. I wasn't feeling certain, as I was with G, or pessimistic as the one that failed, I just put one foot in front of the other. I said to myself "There's a plan for me. If I am meant to have this baby, it will work" It did.

I'm not saying it was destiny, or faith, or positive thinking. I have no explanation. But it worked and I am thankful every day.

  • Because I never had a problem getting pregnant, just getting pregnant in the right place and staying pregnant.  IVF eliminated my tubal problems and I think the hormonal monitoring really helped too.

This.  With the failures under my belt,  I was really struggling to remain hopeful and keep positive.  Dh was a great coach.  I believe accupunture was also helpful.

  • I took Valium with IVF #2. I'm pretty convinced that's what helped my severely tilted uterus to relax and welcome little embie Sophia:)

I have no scientific reason to think this, but I think my c/p from my 2nd cycle "prepped" my ute for my 3rd cycle. Between cycles 1 & 2 I switched from a bad RE to another one that had very high success rates. I think their embryologists are just far superior, and that's how I went from  nothing sticking to a c/p. Or it could just be statistics....
  • pregnancy #1 - sheer dumb luck - had a sh!tty response and only 2 embryos, but one stuck.   I think acupuncture helped.

    pregnancy #2 - a better protocol than my others - estrogen priming/antagonist.   Great response, 2 stuck + 2 frozen.

  • This is so interesting - I think we should save this thread!

My first IVF I believe I stimmed too fast (no injectible cycles beforehand so they had no idea). They got 32 eggs. IMO too many. Had many embryos on day 3 but by day 5 only 2 were left and were morulas instead of blasts.

Second round - stimmed slower (14 days) and ate more protein...got 18 eggs but better fert rate. We did a 3dt regardless b/c of what happened first round but waited until day 5 to freeze....and guess what, had 2 good enough to put on ice. So, to me that says the whole cycle was better.

My FET is in 12 days and I am hoping one of those 2 will stick aorund for awhile!
