HOLY MOLY RESUME BOOSTER

So....IF I decide to come back to work following my maternity leave, I will alone be in charge of 35 sections of lab.  Indifferent For the same piddly salary with the same additional grunt duties nobody else wants to do.  Sometimes Gubmint benefits just ain't worth it, probably.

For reference, I started out with about 10 sections of lab.  Only the government could essentially quadruple the job requirements listed on your job description and then expect you to do it for the same amount of money.

Maybe so, but I have never worked private industry in this deep of a recession.  Quadrupling job duties is just excessive IMO.  Period.

  • I've had the same thing happen to me in a non-government job in a non-recession economy.
  • Yup, things in my industry are starting to see an upswing, but it was really tough for a while and still is for a lot of folks.

At the height of the downturn in our industry I was cut to 1/2 time, 1/2 pay, all the same duties.

It sucks, but you have to do what you have to do to keep your job these days.

It sounds like you have another tick mark in the con column for keeping yours after #2 is born.

  • This isn't limited to government-happens in private industry all the time.  Esp. these days, if someone leaves, a backfill isn't hired so everyone else takes on more.

Well, at least if I decide to SAH they won't have trouble finding someone crazy (desperate) enough to do the job who was actually capable enough to do it.  I don't think they would find someone competent to do what I do for my salary if the economy was better.  When I applied, in a booming economy, I was the only candidate they had who knew how to make a 1M solution and I had the least education (just a bachelors).

I just really don't like that employers think they can just heap extra work and responsibilities on people "just because".  That is how good employees get burnt out.

  • I left a job in the University System and when I went back to visit a professor a few months later, they'd hired in THREE separate people to do the job I'd been doing myself.

     Nice.

Essentially the only "pros" in the column are my health insurance is way better with this job (HCR did not solve my problem) than with DH's (and the only reason I did not turn in my resignation in January).  And I am less than 4 years away (closer to 3) from being vested in the Teachers Retirement System which is a sweet deal.  I think its matched like 10%.  But right now you can come and go within the system throughout your career, the 10 years do not have to be consecutive.  But you never know if that might change.  I might end up finding a TRS qualifying job down the road to complete my years of service, but that is just a gamble.

Daycare with 2 is pretty much my entire take home pay so that is probably the trump right there.

I also just never wanted to breastfeed while working FT ever again.  It was so hard.

Yep.  Once they reel you in they suck every bit of life out of you they can get then once you have had enough they make the work conditions tolerable for the next person (or persons).

I would hope that the decision to perform at the same level with less resources is based on the bottom line and not just arbitrarily made, especially when it comes to educational programs.

They say its "budget".  Of course.  However, you know the the end result is that the students, faculty, and staff suffer for lack of resources and warm bodies to do tasks.  Its just a necessary "evil" in their minds to make their bottom line work out.  Like how my mom is a media specialist and tells me libraries at schools might get closed.  Make sense out of that.  Or how they are cramming 30+ pubescent teenagers in a classroom with a newbie teacher barely 5 years older than they are.

Well at my last job, I had to jump through hoops of fire to get hired.   Took MS office tests up the wazoo, etc before I could get hired.   But the reason so much got heaped on me is because 90% of the other assistants had no idea how to open a word or excel document, much less create a power point project.    I would love to know how these girls got hired, but I think it had to do with their blondeness.

So the do-ers were given to do and the others were just desk candy.
