2nd Trimester

3 months to go and no name

I am basically in my third trimester and we have no names picked out.  For girls, there are a couple that we like, for boys we know the middle name (after his Dad) but have no real first name choices.  At this point we're planning on bringing a list into the hospital but I really don't want to name my baby in a pressure situation.  Ideally, we'd go in with two or three choices that we love and then decide after LO is born.  But, I don't think we have any names that either of us LOVES.

Is anyone else in this situation or been in it previously?  Any advice?

Re: 3 months to go and no name

  • We have our girls names, but not a definite boys name. We have about 5 names on that list, but DH won't commit to any of them. I told him that if we get to the hospital without a name then he no longer gets a vote. He's had 9 months to offer an opinion! (don't worry, I am kidding)

  • same as pp-- we have a girl's name picked out, but are very non-commital about a boys name. i think there were a few, very few, that we kind of threw around but that's it. at our 20 week u/s the tech was "pretty sure" it's a girl, but i'd like to have a boys name just in case.
  • Sorry, no advice, but we are due the same day and have no names picked out either.  My dh just rejects (mostly for ridiculous reasons) names that I come up with but doesn't offer any suggestions...fun times :-)  I think your plan to go in with a short (2-3) name list is a good idea!  Good luck!!!  Don't stress, your baby will get a name!
  • I'm ready, but my friend isn't ready yet, and wasn't last time.  She went to the hospital thinking she was having a girl (based on intuition and not US) and when they found out it was a boy, they had to come up with one.  They ended up naming him after her dad, and they all love his name now.

Amazing.  This is our biggest problem with the whole thing.  He's been rejecting every name i come up with because 'i just don't like it.'  Very frustrating.  Good to know you have no names either, i just feel like so many ladies on here have their names picked out so early and it makes me a bit anxious.  I know the baby won't leave the hospital without a name, I just want to love it and fear that might not happen.  But i'm also sure that no matter what we name him/her it will end up seeming like the perfect name as they grow into it.

  • Try not to worry about it too much.  We had only a couple that we each thought that they weren't too bad for each gender, but it wasn't a "THAT's IT!" type of moment.  We decided for sure about 3 hrs after DS was born before we started calling people around 7 am.  We like to leave things to the last minute.  I love DS's first name and I compromised with his middle (DH liked it).  I'm ok with that.
  • I was in your situation. When I hit 27 weeks is when I finally gave up on finding a name we LOVED. Before being pg, Dh and I always said we wanted to name our little boy Ethan. Well, when it came down to it, I just wasn't set because I was waiting on another name to pass me by that I loved. It never happened. I finally went to Michaels and bought his name, Ethan, in the white letters and a little choo choo train that spells his name. It's becoming more real now and I am totally fine with his name. I say just give it time.
  • One of my friends just had a little girl and they could not decide on a name until 2 weeks before she delivered!
  • We don't have names, especially boys names.  I am not worried.  My goal for most things: nursery, names, bag packed is my shower on May 15, so I still see myself as having time.

We are planning on going into the hospital with 2 or 3 names for each gender and seeing how it goes.  I don't think it will be high pressure but then again, I won't be afraid to leave without a name.

I think there will be a moment when DH buckles down on the nursery and the names and I am trying not to push him.
