Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Was anyone's baby not ready for solids at 6 months?

We just started trying solids last Friday and she HATES them! Granted we have only tried to give her oatmeal and it has only been 4 days but she actually started to cry when I brought the bowl over to her yesterday.

Is she just not ready or was oatmeal the wrong kick-off food?

  • have you tried rice cereal?  DD gobbled it up the first couple times and then didn't want any for a week or two.  It could just be that it's a new thing and that's why LO is not enjoying it.

There's no reason to rush it though, I know plenty of people who start later!  So there's no pressure to push it now. Just do what feels right.

  • Maybe try a fruit... sometimes the texture of oatmeal is hard for them. The sweetness of fruit can get them interested. But if she's not ready, wait a week or so then try again. No worries, she'll get there!
  • Try mixing fruit with it. DD was definitely ready for solids but she hated the plain oatmeal or rice cereal.
  • DS never liked oatmeal or rice cereal.  I just started trying oatmeal again, but I mix it with his pureed veggies or fruit.

You can skip it and move on to fruits and veggies for sure! That said...the first few days of DS trying purees he was kind of iffy about it, but now gobbles them up! We started at 6 mo.

  • We skipped the cereals.  She didn't like them and I thought they smelled bad and tasted like mush.  I always try some of whatever I give her to see if it's actually eatable or not.  Anyways, we give her the purees and add a little cereal to thicken them.  She didn't like the applesauce but does like pear, peaches and green beans.
  • We started at a little over 6 months and it took her a good 3 weeks to really catch on. DD still isn't a huge eater. It takes some practice.

  • We tried oatmeal and rice cereal first and he hated both. Then we tried barley cereal and he LOVED that. Or don't even do cereals. Just skip right to a fruit or veggie.

  • kinda. at first she seemed to like rice cereal, squash, and sweet potatoes and hated everything else. now she pretty much hates everything but usually she'll eat a few bites of cereal at dinner. i mix in a little veggie sometimes. it sucks because i made a bunch of batches of baby food for her and she doesn't like them. boo.
  • We started at 6.5 months.  DD only just started to like solids over the last 3 weeks or so.  That plain oatmeal is really bland.  Try adding fruit to it or skip it entirely.  We started with sweet potatoes.

  • Mine wasn't ready. We stopped for a week or so and still not interested so we gave up. At 7 months we started offering her something, either a puree or soft table food every time we had a meal but never forced anything. At 7 1/2 months she finally started eating small amounts of food but she's still not a big eater and super picky. She likes finger foods best. Banana and yogurt are the only two foods she will eat well so we mix everything with one of them. And she's never eaten more than the equivalent of half a jar of food. I don't have any tricks for you. We tried everything and nothing worked. it definitely just happened when she was ready.
  • My LO rejected rice and sweet potatoes at 6 months. Now she is 7.5 months and still has barely eaten any solids.

  • My daughter is still not terribly interested in solids.  She will eat some table foods, but that's it.  Even then she's done after 4-5 bites.  I keep offering and am sure she'll get it eventually.  She does eat more if there's a larger crowd around eating, which is really unusual.

My DD doesn't get overly thrilled with solids. She just doesn't care about them. She eats them when I serve it to her. Remember, solids right now are NOT for nutrition. If she doesn't like oatmeal, feed her something else. Or, wait another two weeks and try again. There are no Solid Food Laws that require your child to be eating 3 solid meals per day by 8 months. Relax and have fun!

  • We haven't tried them yet and probably won't for a while longer. We have feeding issues that are finally getting better, but I don't want to add  more work for her.
