Counting kicks? Active baby?

Maybe a stupid question, but I'm a worrier!  The baby has  been extremely active these last few days. I feel like today she is very calm, I've barely felt her. When are you supposed to start counting kicks? My Dr. has not mentioned it, which is why I think it may be too early.  Are some of your babies very active one day and very calm the next?  I've felt a few here and there but nothing like the past week or so.  Anything to worry about?

Re: Counting kicks? Active baby?

  • My doc told me to start counting at 28 weeks.  And to check for 7-10 kicks an hour.

  • The baby will go through days of being active and days of rest... they have growth spurts where they spend more time sleeping. :)
  • not yet...those little kicks are just that right now...little. You shouldn't really worry until the babys at the age where they have strong bones and muscles...then you'll always notice it.

theres a good chance hes kicking and you're not noticing as well!
  • My little guy is the same way. If he's super-active one day, I enjoy it while it lasts, but then I expect him to be pretty quiet the next day or two. Sometimes I don't notice that he's moving around until I actually lie down and focus on him.

My OB recommends starting kick counts at 28 weeks, and then keeping track of how long it takes to feel ten movements. I'm trying not to worry about it until then. Although, sometimes I do try to trick him into moving by eating or drinking something sweet or poking at my tummy! :)
