can someone explain to me... (vent)

Why is it that if your husband makes a decent salary and you choose not to work, then you are a SAHM, and it is "the hardest job in the world."  But if your husband or SO doesn't make a good salary, or you are a single mom, and you choose not to work, then you are "just sitting on your ass all day?"

Ughh...my neighbor who is a SAHM was complaining about welfare and medicaid and "paying for lazy people who won't just go get a job."  I wanted to point out that a lot of those people have very similar responsiblities to hers.

Re: can someone explain to me... (vent)

  • I can only speak for myself and my sister. My sister is a young single mom who doesn't work b/c she is lazy and doesn't want to have to get up early. She gets gov't money (which is fine) but she sponges off of everyone else and expects them to pay for her bills and watch her kid. THOSE are the kind of people that I call lazy and not SAHM's. If I was single you bet your asss I would be working to support my family.

I should add....she doesn't do all the same things as I do as a SAHM, she pawns her little boy off on anyone who is close enough.

  • She probably doesn't realize it's a two way street.

Also, I don't think it's a big deal if someone SAHM or SAHD even if they have an "okay" salary and not a great salary.

Also, she probably doesn't realize that sometimes having 2 or more kids (sometimes 1 depending on your area) that you can't work because your paycheck will go solely to daycare costs, etc.

I don't think it's a big deal if people use benefits if they qualify for them and need them.

Your neighbor sounds "hoity toity" IMO. Wink

  • I think you are both right.  There are many people on welfare who abuse it, can work, but don't.  But then there are people who sincerely need it and want to work their way to not have to rely on it forever.

i agree with this entire statement.  money isn't everything - some people chose to let go of some luxuries to be their kids; some people are in situations where it takes 2 salaries just to make ends meet.  i think there are a lot of different situations that can result in SAHM/D status.
