Any Canadian Gals Out There?

Just wanted to check in and get a feel for how many/who is Canadian on here.  Although everyone (okay...most people) on here all have great advice and knowledge, I thought it might be nice to touch base with those of us who don't deal with the same insurance or mat. leave issues...but also can't change doctors, OBs, etc. at the drop of a hat.

  • Yup! I'm Canadian!  There's definitely a lot of posts on here that just don't apply to us, eh? (<---lol!).  I know I sure didn't have much choice when it comes to my OB.  I'm sure I could have fought for a different one if I'd wanted, but if I use the one associated with my GP, I get to stay with my GP through most of my pregnancy which I think is kind of nice.  It just means I have to deliver at a big hospital in the next city over, instead of the smaller one I was considering.

Exactly.  When looking at books at Chapters I picked out the Canadian editions for the same reasons.

Pleased to "meet" you, Mrs. Seli.  Greetings from Southwestern Ontario.  Where abouts are you from?

  • Hi there, I am also Canadian! It IS difficult to change doctors, I have a male doctor who is known for being a great doctor, I just thought I would feel more comfortable with a female but there are apparently no female obstetricians in my area accepting new patients. I also was wondering about ultrasounds, it may just be me, but it seems like ultrasounds are less common and occur later on in the pregnancy in Canada. But I am thankful for the 50 week mat leave!

  • me too.  Reporting from the Okanagan, BC :)

We don't get a choice here apart from midwife (rotating clinic of 4) or OB (rotating clinic of 9) which is actually more choice than I had the last time around (there were no MWs).

I'm a born and raised Albertan, live near Calgary, but a die-hard Sask Roughrider fan! lol!  Southwestern Ontario, hey?  does that mean you're NOT from Toronto?? lol!

yeah, as far as I know I get 2 ultrasounds...I had an early one to date the pregnancy (doc and I had a bit of a dispute...I Oed late) and then I get one at about 20 weeks.  And have to go to a separate ultrasound clinic to get them done...no ultrasounds at the doctor's office!

  • Hi ladies, I'm from Vancouver (suburb, 30 minutes east, actually). With my first pregnancy I went with an OB that my family doctor (at the time) recommended to me. I liked her but didn't get a lot of personal experience. This time around I'm trying to go with a midwife but it's hard to find one that is taking new clients at the moment :( I'm not really wanting to travel 45mins-1hr to visit my midwife each time! So if I can't get on with one I'm just going to be seeing my current family doctor who will then transfer me to the OB clinic attached to the hospital where I'll be delivering.

  • Hey Ladies,

I don't normally post...but when I saw the title of this thread I had to!! I am a Saskatchewan girl (Go Roughriders - Mrs. Seli we could be best of friends) but I have been living in Victoria with my soon to be husband for the last 7 years. We are expecting our first (I am 7.5 weeks) but are living in China. I can't wait to get back home to a place where I do not have to pay to see a doctor or worry about insurance! Unfortunatly I will not have the paid 50 weeks of holidays since I have been out of work for the last little while living abroad...but I will manage. Just wanted to send a quick hello to you all!!

    Cheers!

  • Hello ladies!  I am from Southern Ontario.  I was born and raised in SK, lived in MB and then AB and now ON!  I have been in ON for about 7 years now.  I have 2 boys and we have decided to have one more!

For my first birth, I had an OB.  It was good and I don't regret that decision at all.  I had a big baby boy and a forceps delivery, so it was good to have an OB (although it wasn't my OB that delivered the baby!).  For my second, I had a midwife.  Such a different experience!  I highly recommend it ... even if you have to travel 45 min. to see her!  My second birth was a LOT faster and epidural free ... like I said ... a different experience all together!

This time, I have my midwife again.  Easier to get in once you have had a midwife.

Nice to chat with some Canadians Smile

     Have a great day!

  • Canadian here!! From Ontario as well!
  • I am Canadian! I'm on north-west Ontario, and am quite happy with my doctor - and thankful for our leave. :)
  • I'm from South Western Ontario also about 45 min W of Toronto.  I'm using a midwife to avoid to the OB issue.  This is my 4th and I have used a midwife every time.  HIGHLY recommend :)
  • ME! I too recommend a midwife.

  • Newfie girl here, first pregnancy. My GP and my OB are a 45 minute drive from me, in the "big city" - St. John's, which is where I will have my baby. I also find the u/s issue annoying, here in NL we only get one at 20 weeks, unless there are risk factors.

I was looking at your CIBC banner and shirt in your pic in your piecring post and wondered.  I grew up in Oakville and now live in London.
