Postpartum Depression

Took my first pill this morning

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to start my lexapro and decided it was best to go ahead and take it. I took my first pill this morning and I'm so nervous. I know the doctor wouldn't prescribe something that would hurt the baby but it still makes me scared. Hopefully this stuff will kick in fast so I can enjoy things more. I feel like I am missing out since I am in my own little world.

  • I'm on Zoloft, but it works in a similar way. You may have a few days of side effects, which can include feeling a little drugged or even an increase in anxiety. Just power through that and know that it's normal.

SSRIs are very effective, but can take a good 4-6 weeks to work, so be patient and hang in there.

Are you getting counseling as well? It's often as much help (if not more) than meds.

  • I hope that you are feeling more at ease soon!

When I started taking the antidepressant prescribed for my PPD, Pristiq, I felt several side effect (can't remember exactly, but they were enough for me to call my doc).  He had me take the med every other day for the first week.  That helped a lot.  When I went back to taking it every day, I did not have any more of the side effects.

As pp mentioned, it does take a while for the beneficial effects of the antidepressant to really start working, so you won't likely feel all better immediately.  But remember that you are taking steps forward!

Thanks for checking back in.  So many ladies post and then we don't see them again.  I wonder how folks are doing.
