S/O : Food for an 8 month old?

Jackson is now down to 4 BF sessions a day and is eating purees like a champ. He is starting to bite down on his spoon and grab it out of my hand.  Soooooo I started to slowly introduce some table food such as bananas (VERY small pieces) and cheerios, his eyes got really big and wanted MORE. I am wondering what else I can give him? What else is safe?

  • We had really good luck with Avacado. Of course there are puffs and mum-mums. Kaylin was eating steamed fruits and veggies around 8-9 months as well.

  • Anything he can bite down on and get through with his gums. Some of the things we started with were canned pears & canned green beans.  She also still loves the Mum mums rice biscuits - he could totally gnaw on them and they melt away.  Also try Kix cereal - they're a little bit softer than cheerios and easier for beginning self feeders.
  • Oooh. I hadn't thought about Kix. Dash is nowhere near there (no teeth) but he does love thick purees. When Delaney was that age, we also did the white chedder pirates booty.
  • Do you have a baby food mill? I love ours, you can get them at Babies R Us. Very simple, you just put cooked food through there and it makes it a smooth consistency for them. We've done lots of things through there--spinach, broccoli, even ground beef and chicken. Ditto pp on anything soft is great too...baked or steamed potato/sweet potato, steamed veggies,

  • very soft pieces of pear, soft roasted potatoes, carrots, beets, etc., black beans, scrambled egg yolk, tofu

ETA: I use golden beets as they don't have quite the stain-power (or make the scary looking poops) that red beets do.

  • This is not the healthiest of options, but Liam LOVES graham crackers!  This weekend I'm planning to steam and then chop up broccoli...we'll see what he thinks of that texture!  I have also given him shredded cheese which he does pretty well with.   I got some great puffs from Whole Foods that are 50% less sugar than the gerber kind.

I plan to just start playing around with things.  Mashing with a fork instead of pureeing.    It's sooooooo messy though!

  • seems like Kix would be a choking hazard...

  • I give Lila all kinds of stuff.  She prefers eating with her hands.  Cheese, whole grain bread, pear, banana, avocado, cantaloupe (that's new as of yesterday), beans, cooked veggies (green bean, carrot, potato), cheerios, puffs, pasta...

  • At 8mo Cam loved puffs, canned green beans, canned madarin oranges and peaches, pasta, avacado and rice

    At 8 months we did:

Shredded cheese, cooked small macaroni (not elbow, but the salad stuff), canned peaches and pears, green beans, meatballs (cut into really small bites), peas, pieces of waffle, bagel, toast, bananas, mangos, yogurt, yogurt melts, puffs, cheerios.
