Re: is your Tv on all the time?

  • our tv is always on, even if no one is watching it. i think its more out of a habit for me. the total silence would drive me nuts, so i need the tv on for the noise!
  • Loading the player...
  • It's on a lot now but not all day sinc we don't have cable. I plan on not having it on nearlya s much when my LOs are closer to toddlerhood because I keep reading how horrible it is for their language development and their imagination, etc, etc, etc. I do have pandora.com on a lot playing music, if the tv isn't on. Much better background noise!

    This.

  • all.the.time! I'm also not sure if this is a good thing but I HATE sitting in silence.

  • Ours is usually on...but we're getting better about turning it off because Evan likes to stand in front of it and watch commercials. But nursing would seem to last foreeeeever without TV. We usually make sure to have it off after dinner/before bed so we can play and read books.
  • ours is on all the time. Like pp said I like it for background noise even if we aren't watching it. I gotta be honest though, I never watch anything I want to watch- it is always on PBS or PBS Kids or PBS Sprout. Now that it is getting nicer out, we are outside more so he won't be exposed to TV as much.

But I am not cutting it out all together, I remember when I was growing up I had a cousin who wasn't allowed to watch TV, and to be honest, she was odd. And when she would come over to play, she would never want to play- she just wanted to watch my parents TV- since she never got to. It wasn't much fun.

I've heard that too about it doesn't help with language, etc. But eh, I don't worry about that too much. In all honesty, my kid is the 3rd generation in our family who has grown up with a SAHM who keeps the TV on all day. LOL!

I've told my parent and ILs that I was worried about having the TV on too much, they all laughed because DH's grandfather was a TV repairman and his grandmother had the TV on all day, so my MIL grew up with it, same with my mom and dad.....same with me and my husband- my mom kept it on all the time, for Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, then she'd watch her soaps. So far we've all turned out OK.

  • No.  We don't have cable- only the free digital channels and the reception isn't that great so it annoys me and I rarely turn it on.
  • Nope.  It's on in the evenings after dinner and I usually watch a show while I'm eating lunch and the kids are napping.  During the day, they watch DVDs (1 or 2) on the computer.  If it's on, I'd be even less inclined to do anything!
  • Never- maybe twice a day. while she is awake. She usually watches one episode of Blues Clues which is like 23 minutes. And then the world news is usually on after dinner while we are cleaning up the toys and getting ready for bed.

After she is in bed- DH has it on until we go to bed. Which i hate.

This, if DH is home, but not during the day. The guy constantly turns it on "for noise", then leaves the room. As if we don't have enough "noise" with 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a toddler running around. ;)

  • Once DH is home, it usually goes on and stays on. When we're home I let DS watch a show right when he wakes up then I turn it off and encourage him to play with something else. If I feel it's too quite, I turn on music. I admit, some days it's on a whole lot more but I work towards it being a minimum.
  • If DD had it her way it would be. She gets completely mesmerized with the thing. Sometimes I let her watch Sesame Street, but that's the only time it's really on. Plus we don't have cable, so there's only about two channels that we can watch.

I know what you mean about background noise though. On most days I like to listen to books on CDs (free from the library!) or podcasts (free from iTunes).

  • DD watches two episodes of Elmo's World on DVD while I shower and at and DH and I watch from 8-10:00 at night if there are good shows on network TV. Since we don't have cable, anything that I'd have on wouldn't be good TV anyway. I actually think I'd find the "background" noise annoying with all the extra kid noise.

  • my tv is always on. i think i would feel lonely with out it, seeing as DD cant talk yet...lol. i try to face her away from the tv in her bouncy seat and we listen to a lot of the music channels because she likes to dance.
  • No it is not on at all during the day. Sometimes the noise of it just bugs me. Once DD is older, it may be on more.

  • With one I was like that.  I had the news on almost all the time.  Now, with two, I only have it on until 9:00 and then I won't turn it back on until 3:30 or 4:00 depending on when we all get sick of each other.  I throw on a Sesame Street DVD and it gives me a little break in the afternoon.

DH and I will watch a show or two a week after the kids go to bed, but it's very rare in general now that we watch anything.

  • Nope. In fact it hasn't been on since about 11 last night. We don't have cable, so we only have about 5 channels - ABC, and 4 PBS channels. lol I always have music playing though either on the computer or the radio. Also, I don't want DS watching TV until he is older, so now that he notices it (and tries to watch it) I pretty much only turn it on when he's asleep.

  • As much as I hate to admit it, yes, my TV is always on.  More so now that the baby is here just so the big boys have something to do and will stay out of my room when I am nursing and trying to get the baby to calm down and go to sleep.  We have a beautiful backyard, something my boys aren't used to (we always lived in apartments until last June), and they refuse to go out without me and right now I really cannot go outside all the time because of the baby.

  • Nope. Once in a while I'll turn on Yo Gabba Gabba (because I like it; DD mostly ignores it!) and about two or three times a week I will watch Gilmore Girls when it comes on at 5 (she ignores that too, but she does like the theme music). Otherwise I don't turn it on until DD is in bed, and even then not every night. We're not big TV people.

  • I love silence! I can't understand wanting the TV on just for the noise.

The boys watch TV shows, and when I feel they've had enough, I'll turn to a classical music channel. That way the baby has no motivation to keep turning the TV back on once I've turned it off.

  • Ours is on all morning. We do not have cable so our options are limited, and I try to turn it off in the afternoons for nap time (even though this silence is killing me!!!) Its then back on for later afternoon and evenings!
  • We don't have a tv on the main floor of our house.  We have one in our bedroom (which is on the second floor) and one in the basement.  But even if we did have one in the living room, it would not be on during the day.  DH leaves it on for background noise and I hate that.  First of all, I like quiet and secondly, it's a waste of electricity.  I do like to listen to music and I have an under the counter mounted CD player w/ an adapter for my iPod in the kitchen and I put that on a few times a week during the day.

  • Ours is on all day. I leave it on PBS until 5, when BBC news comes on, then I change to the local news, then my primetime shows.

DD has consistently been WAY ahead on language development, and it's not like she sits there and watches the shows, anyway.  She pays attention to the opening song, then goes back to what she was doing.  We also read A TON of books every day, play dollhouse, go outside on nice days, etc.

  • Ours is on most of the day but a lot of the time it is on the kids music channel. We have directv and so we have the Sirius music channels on the tv. They usually watch 2-3 episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse throughout the day.

I guess I use the music as background noise but both DD and DS love it and love to dance. Even when we are playing in their rooms their radios/CD player is on.

  • It's never on during the day.  Lately, I've been getting lazier during DD's naptime, and I have been watching tv for about an hour of that time (she usually naps for 1.5-2 hours), and then getting things done.  I've got to put my feet up at least once during the day now that my belly is growing!  When she's awake, it isn't on at all.  I never wanted to get into the habit of daytime tv, since I know it can be such a time sucker.

  • Nope. The TV in the playroom isn't hooked up to cable. Only plays DVD's. The girls are allowed to watch when L goes for his nap.

I don't watch any TV until all the kids are asleep.

  • When I was at your stage of motherhood, it was on A LOT.  All I did was nurse and take care of Ty and do random stuff around the house - during nursing I was all about TV or playing solitaire on my iPhone.  I didn't worry about it because I didn't really think it was affecting him.  Now that he is almost 2 I make concerted efforts to turn it off when I am not watching something and/or I think he has had enough for the day (yes he watches a little every day).  I try to enjoy the silence when it is off but its a struggle sometimes.  :)

  • I rarely had it on when Eva was an infant but that's because I've never gotten into any daytime tv.  Now that she's older we never have it on during the day (once a week she gets to watch a movie or a show).  If you were to ask this after April 4th when baseball starts back up it would be a totally different answer- if the Yankees are playing and the game is televised, the tv is on in our house!

  • I watch Good Morning America in the AM in about an hour bc I Tivo it and then other than that the TV is off unless DD is watching her 1 hr of Sesame Street while I cook/clean (and this is only maybe 3 times a week).  Other than that the TV is off until she is in bed.  My mom has the TV on all day at her house and the constant noise kind of drives me nuts- and I just feel "icky" having the TV on all day for some reason.

To be fair, we really aren't home all day either- we usually have an outing in the am until lunch, then we have lunch, usually play then it's nap time.  (I work from home- so usually work during her nap time- so no TV for me).   After nap, we have a couple of hours where DD usually draws, plays outside, we take a walk or go to the park, run an errand or prep dinner.  Then it's pretty much time for dinner, then another half hour or so then bed.  I really don't know when I'd find time to watch TV.

  • It's on quite a bit, but it's not always on. If no one is watching or no one is paying attention, I turn it off. Between 2 kids, and 2 dogs, there's always plenty of noise in the house that I don't need background noise/music lol.  I treasure silence now.
