How do you pronounce aunt?

I'm having a debate with MH. How do you pronounce "aunt"?

Ah-nt?

or like the bug, Ant?

I say ah-nt. He says ant. I think my lovely aunt is not a bug. We're both from the midwest, so I'm not sure why we pronounce it differently.

I like Au-nt, not ant. Ants are bugs Au-nts are your parent's sister. But that's just how I like it.

I say ah-nt, cause that is how I learned it in my English classes in Germany. They teach British English though, I am not sure if that is where the ah-nt pronunciation is from? MH says ant and makes fun of me :-)

But all of those other words sound like "aw" at the beginning, at least the way I pronounce them and how I usually hear them. Author = aw-ther, Autistic = aw-tistic, etc. So then aunt would be awnt. Or do you pronounce "author" as ah-ther?

Both... when I'm talking to/about my Texan family I say "ant" and I say Ah-nt around my New England fam. When talking about myself, I say Ant. Usually. I'm all over the place!

I have always used aunt like the bug for my aunts growing up. My niece calls me auntie, like the bug. My aunt is always correcting her, telling her it should be "ahnt" and I hate that! I feel like its way too stuffy for a little 5 year old, and too stuffy for me to be called that too! To me, its like calling your mom "mother" or something. No thank you.

i say it "ant" but MH normally says "aren't" --- he's from NH and i guess it's part of that MA adding 'r' where it doesn't belong creeping up. I think it sounds ridiculous and always do a double-take!

I grew up on the East Coast, so I say Ah-nt, but I occassionally say "Ant" because it's quicker and most people in Colorado just make fun of me.

I'm messed up, I use both. I say Ah-nt when I'm talking about my Ah-nt went on vacation. But I say Ant when I say my Ant, Carol, is a photographer. I must live in a border area where we are split on this one.
