I have a good friend who loves this place, too! It was booked when we went (last week) and was probably a little more than we wanted to spend.
We stayed at the Drury Inn - La Cantera and liked it a lot. It was not far at all from Sea World and pretty centralized to the other things we wanted to do. I recommend a stop by the Children's Museum and lunch or dinner at The Cove.
We're headed there Friday and will be staying through Monday.
We decided to stay at a more centrally located hotel, rather than downtown for a couple of reasons. First was proximity to the attractions. We're doing Sea World, Six Flags, Natural Bridge, and also the Riverwalk. I figure it will be easiest to get to most of these places being a bit north of downtown. The other reason is parking. Most Riverwalk/Downtown hotels add a parking premium of $20+ per day on top of your nightly room charge. It's not a ton, but it would easily add close to $100 to our trip
I'll be sure to give you a review of our hotel when we get back!.
It was probably book and high in price due to spring break. But it should be okay in april...I got a room there for $99 in mid may when it's "off season".
We used to go once a year (haven't since being engaged, and the wedding last year), and we always stayed on the riverwalk.
We stayed one time at a place near Sea World only b/c we got a 2 days Sea World pass, so we drove up Saturday and went for a while - stayed at the close hotel, went again on Sunday and then stayed on the Riverwalk Sunday night. I wish I remembered the name of the hotel b/c it had all wood floors and walls and was so LOUD. You could hear everyone in their rooms, we did not like it.
On or near the Riverwalk we've stayed at Marriott, the Crockett Hotel, The Hotel Contessa, and the Fairmount. Liked them all, only stayed at the Contessa on a Sunday night b/c it was cheaper. :-)
Have you done Sea World before? If not, my only advice would be to check the show schedules before you plan your day. The time we went Sat and Sun we decided to wait until Sun to see Shamu b/c we were tired. Well, we got there when it opened Sun and didn't realize that Shamu only had one show .... 7 hours later. lol. It was a loooong Sunday, but luckily DH found the Budweiser tent where you can sample free beer so he stayed happy.

It's so awesome there. We rented a 2-bedroom condo last fall. It was huge and so comfortable for the four of us.
