1st Trimester

Really worried, please help!

So this morning was our first appointment, the doctor did a vaginal u/s and found the baby and the sac, but no heartbeat. Doc said everything else looks fine (development, size, etc.). He also said I am 6 weeks and 3 days, and "should" see a heartbeat, but also that its "not uncommon" to not see it yet!?! Has this ever happened to anyone? and the outcome? Doc scheduled another u/s for 2 weeks from today, and said if we don't see or hear one at that point there is something wrong. I'm not sure how I am going to make it a whole 2 weeks not knowing, please help

Re: Really worried, please help!

  • It's still a little early to see a hb. At this stage, things can vary day by day. Your doc isn't concerned, so try not to worry too much. I hope the next 2 weeks fly by for you.

  • same as pp said. a little early. When I had my first u/s there was just a sac. Next appt heartbeat! So don't worry- esp. since your dr isn't worrying. You have another appt and u/s and just go from there.
  • My doctor doesn't even listen for the heartbeat until 11-12 weeks. I think it is so hit and miss early on, so she likes to avoid situations like this. I wouldn't worry unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Thank you ladies, but easier said than done :) We greatly appreciate your advice, T & P!

The heart does start beating in the 6th week and at this point, a day can make a huge difference. In fact, you baby's heart could have started beating this afternoon. It's crazy how fast things change.

I know it's going to be tough, but try to stay positive--it's a good sign that the baby is growing and was a good size.

I am 6 weeks pregnant and when I scheduled my first visit they suggested i wait until week 8 so that there would be a heart beat, the heart is now only forming I was told at week 5,6.  Good luck and stop stressing.

  • I was talking about this in an earlier post.  I don't understand while all these docs are doing US so early.  Because sometimes you just can't see things...because it is early!  Now you are worried....don't be worried...it is just early yet.
  • my doctor told me specifically because of this she doesn't do the first u/s until at least 8 weeks. She said that any earlier if the parents don't see the heartbeat it causes them to worry for no reason alot of times. I know the next 2 weeks of your life are going to drag, but keep your head up Smile
  • Ok we're trying not to worry, trying to stay positive. I even made a ticker, let's hope these next 2 weeks fly by. And praying the next u/s results are better than the first. Thanks Again Ladies!
  • I had this exact same thing happen to me. My follow up appointment is tomorrow. Hoping to see the heartbeat then.

  • I was in my 5th week and am currently waiting out my 2 weeks til I go back. The nurse said that they tell everyone that they should see a hb by week 7, so try not to be too concerned! Also, it depends on the equipment they are using. The tech told me to come back to her in 2 weeks because her machine was better than the machine in the exam room.

Um, because maybe some people have fertility issues? Or recurrent pregnancy loss?   I had my first u/s at 6w6d and heard both heartbeats.

OP, I know it's hard not to worry, but I just wanted to add that a day or two can make a huge difference.  Your LO's heart could be beating right now.  If your doctor was really concerned I could imagine he'd bring you back in a week, instead of two.  I hope everything works out for you.
