swimming gear for 18 mths - 24 mths?

I was wondering if anyone can recommend me any swimming gear for kids between the age of 18-24 mths? I was thinking of a swim float but the recommended age for most swim float is between 6-12 mths.. Swim vest? I'm confused..

Sorry if I sounded dumb.. I guess I don''t have much experience on this..

Thanks much!

  • We've done swim lessons so no 'gear' here. But he does like to play in the raft type floats some times.

I see a lot of kids with water wings and with vests at the pool though.

  • Thanks for your reply.. but more questions...

Embarrassed  this is perhaps another silly question.. I don't know how to swim.. hence the inexperience in all the swimming stuff..

So after you've done swim lessons... they don't use any gears at all? When they do swim lessons, do they use any gear at all to help them learn how to swim?

  • At the YMCA, the first class levels are parent and child. You hold them and get them used to the water and learning how to blow bubbles, float etc.

I think the 3 year old and up classes are kids only and they use a belt with floaty stuff on it.

I don't have any floats b/c my guy loves to play and 'swim' and the floats would get in his way. After the lessons my guy and one sof his little friends are actually >.< that close to swimming on their own! It's super cool.

The Y offers lessons from 6 months up.

We are on our 4th or 5th set of lessons now.

We don't use anything floaty that they wear, because our swim instructor said it created a false sense of security in the water.  We did buy a suit with a floaty in it, but DD tipped over in it last year.  They seem like a great idea, though.  Anyway, we have life vests for boating, or whatever, but mostly they just wear a swimsuit and swim diaper.  DD is very cautious in the water, DS will be the opposite, I think.  Last year he was around 8 months and hung out in something like this and LOVED it.
  • I can't answer your questions, but I just have to say I love the photos in your siggy. My kids are around the same age and interact the same way!!

We don't either for that reason.  MIL ran a swim school for years and years and she doesn't reccomend floaty stuff.  We've only been swimming in pools though so we're always somewhere were DH or I can easily touch.

:) Wow.. our kids are really close in age.. I think both of your kids are 2 weeks older than mine? what a coincidence!

  • Thanks everyone for the response.. I guess no gear would be the best way to go then.. :)
