I ran out a few minutes ago to get lunch and when I pulled over to make sure that my whole order was there, I hear a baby crying in the car next to me. I look over and see a baby (maybe a year old) ALONE in a car. I couldn't believe it. I picked up the phone, dialed 911 and as the operator was coming on I see the "mother" walking out with a chicken sandwich in her hand!!! WTF is wrong with people??? I gave the dispatcher her license plate number and the direction she was headed. I pray to God that they catch up with her. Oh and for what it's worth - I live in Texas - it's 75 here today and the car was sitting directly in the sun. MORON!!

Re: Some people should NOT be parents!!
LMAO
LOL. This.
You crack me up Judah's (in a nonsnark way. seriously). Let's assume she was at Chick Fila.
I was at Chick Fil A - she walked out of the restaurant with her food and a drink so I'm sure she ordered something and waited in line (they were packed). I'm only assuming it was a chicken sandwich - guess it could have been nuggets??
In all seriousness, how do you know how long the baby was in there for? She could of just thrown something away in the trash real fast...like a can outside the place.?
Edit - I guess we posted at the same time.?
This makes me sick! We have had 2 local cases in the past 2 years or so where a mother did this...but their kids actually died and she got away with it. And it's not like the women were complete morons, they were highly educated women with high level jobs and I feel like that is partially why they got off.
But really, how do you leave your kid in the backseat ALL DAY LONG and say you forgot they were in there? sickening....
I mean c'mon, these posts are a dime a dozen. The real issue lies in the sandwich. lol
And OK, Chick Fil A makes sense. lol
seriously, now. if waited in your car for 5 minutes and still didn't see her, then saw her come from INSIDE, then i say good. b/c - while some people are totally comfortable with things like that - it may prevent her from leaving the child int eh car longer next time, kwim?
but a small toddler in a hot car alone just doesn't sound "right". but i would have had to be in the situation to see if it warranted a 911 call.
like this matters??? A child should not be left alone in a card for any period of time if you are going in somewhere... and she said she saw the mom coming outside which implies she was inside the restaurant.

This exactly!!
I leave my kids in the car the 3-5 mintues it takes for me to pump gas in 75 degree weather.
Although i don't agree with her running in a resturant, I would have waited to make sure it was not a long time then chalked it up to a decision I would not have made, wonder how hard teh 911 dispacher was laughing at the follow that car.
Don't you stand right next to the car when you pump gas? I don't get how that's the same.
And honestly, I never go inside to pay without bringing DS in with me. That's why I always pay at the pump. Going in to order food is extremely dangerous. Especially on a hot day. Not to mention the fact that the child was being left in a vulnerable position to be abducted.
I'm thinking about how long it would take me to go into a restaurant, order food, fill up a drink cup, and leave. It takes a while.
I think you did the right thing. If the mother was in sight, I would have called the non-emergency police, but since you couldn't see the mother when you dialed, I think 911 was the right number to call. It'll get her to think it through next time.
I am actually surprised that the TX DFPS website seems to elude that 5 minutes is okay, but anything >5 min = BAD.
"Can I use these same factors when deciding whether to leave a child in my vehicle for a short period of time?
Answer: No. We do not recommend leaving a child in a motor vehicle for any length of time. If children are trapped inside cars, especially during seriously hot weather, it can result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke, leading to permanent disability or death in a matter of minutes. Heat stroke, also known as hyperthermia, can cause shock, seizures, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, and damage to the brain, liver, and kidneys.
Leaving a child in a vehicle is punishable under the Texas Penal Code, Title 5, Chapter 22, Section 10 LEAVING A CHILD IN A VEHICLE. A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly leaves a child in a motor vehicle for longer than five minutes, knowing that the child is:
who is 14 years of age or older. An offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor. If the child is injured, the charge is then elevated to child endangerment, which is a felony. The penalties are six months to two years in jail and a fine up to $10,000.
Leaving a child unattended in a car is also a form of neglectful supervision.
I do see the difference, I just think this post is a little extreme. I agree that some people should not be parents, but I don't thiink just becausee a lady left her kid in the car for like 5 minutes (even though I never would do it) needs a 911 call and a post that she should not be a parent.
People who beat their kids, don't feed them, abuse them in general should not be parents, people making a judgement call different than your own are still fit to be parents IMO.
I guess I don't understand why it matters if it was a long time or not. If she did it once (especially on such a hot day), she probably does it whenever she deems it necessary. Sometimes people will only see that their behavior is dangerous when they learn that it's illegal. I would have called 911 in a heartbeat - let the police educate her on what a dumbass she is - 1 minute, 5 minutes or half an hour.
steph did the right thing.
I can never get on board with the argument that just because there are parents doing things that are worse, it must be okay. (Ahem, just like NNO justifying leaving her son in the bathtub for 10 minutes at a time because there are parents who beat their children... so since there are parents doing things worse, what she was doing is okay.)
You don't know if she had a snack in the back. What if she had cheerios in a snack cup and she choked? What if the doors were unlocked and someone stole the car (this has happened before)? What if the mother had been in there for longer than 5 minutes and the child got heat stroke (let's remember that we really dont' know how long the mom was in there)?
Remember that just like we don't know if she went in to throw something away, we also don't know if she had been in there for 10, 15, or 20 minutes either.
Ummm, this isn't really relevant to the situation being discussed. Most of those cases involve a change in routine, not the parent deliberately leaving their child in the car. Not saying it's excusable, but I'm sure most of those parents feel absolutely awful and have to live with what they've done. Way to judge!
