Big gap in front teeth

Matt's two upper front teeth have come in and there is a huge space between them.  To be honest it sort of looks dorky.  Should I worry about the space and what it may do to his other baby teeth and worse his adult teeth?

DH and I both had braces so I know Matt will need them I just didn't think I would be worrying this early!

Re: Big gap in front teeth

  • I think when the other teeth come in, they'll push them together.

Aaron has a space between his two bottom teeth?thus far the only two that are out, but 3 more will be coming soon as I can see the white beneath his gums.  My DH was worried about this too.

I really think both Matt and Aaron are fine re: baby teeth. I'm sure braces are a possibility for Aaron, too, as both DH and I had them.

This. I got worried as M's bottom teeth came in kind of crooked and spaced out, but then DH convinced me that A) There aren't any other teeth to hem them in and B) They'll fall out in a few years anyway.Stick out tongue

  • My daughter looked just like Violet Affleck with a HUGE gap between her two front teeth. She had a frenectomy (to remove the tissue which causes her gap). Since then, her teeth have moved quite a bit. As you can see from her picture below she still has a gap. It is quite small compared to what it used to be. She gets braces this month to fix the remaining gap/overbite.

Oh, and DS1 has spaces between every single tooth. The dentist loves it! Apparently an undercrowded mouth is much better than an overcrowded one.

  • Good thread!  Grant has space between his teeth too and I assumed that things would move together as teeth came in.  Good to know to keep an eye out for what MamaBear's DD had, but otherwise. . .not to worry.

I agree, the same looks a bit silly. . .

Does anybody else miss their baby's gummy smile?  My friend's one year old only has his bottom two teeth.  Grant, at 8 months, and his four teeth, remind me that he's growing up!

  • Dont worry.  THey will fall out when they get a little older.  And its true...the other ones may push them together.

And its not that dorky...Madonna has it.  Oh , but Mike Tyson has it, so maybe yeah, dorky a little!

  • I think they will get pushed together. Is my daughter the only one about this age who has no teeth? She has bumps in her gums but that is it
  • I believe the average age for a first tooth is the 7th month?though some babies do get teeth earlier (4 months).  Per my aunt, my cousin Michael got his 1st tooth at 3 months and had 6 by 7 months!

Aaron is 7 months and has two bottom teeth?with one (on top) coming in.

  • Sienna has both bottom teeth & just 2 weeks ago I was thinking they looked like they were growing in crooked. But now they look straight. I think they do shift around a bit when growing in. She must be teethig again as she is so moody the last few days & drooling like a cow.

  • I wouldn't worry about it right now. He doesn't even have all his teeth yet. When he gets more teeth, you'll see that they will get closer together and not only that, the more space between them the better when they're little  because that means that they'll have more room for their adult teeth.

I totally do!  He keeps looking more and more like a little boy rather than a baby!

  • I have the opposite problem with my first daughter, aged 3.5 years--her teeth all came in looking PERFECT--straight, no gaps, beautiful. The dentist said that's a bad sign for braces--because adult teeth are bigger, they need those gaps.
  • I had heard that gaps between baby teeth are a good thing because then there is room for the permanent teeth.  My 10.5 month old has a whopping 8 teeth.  Apparently both my DH and I had our teeth early, too.

I wouldn't worry about that.  Keira didn't get teeth until she was 11 1/2 months, when her two bottom teeth came in.  Her pedi said he wouldn't even begin to think there might be an issue unless she still had no teeth at 1 year.  She still only has those two teeth at 16 1/2 months, and the pedi still isn't worried.
