Most people probably know it since it's older news, other probably don't care, but it pisses me off. We have discussed the health care issues and some things on Obama, well I was reading about this earlier and am irritated. Every first Thursday in May there is a National Day of Prayer Service at the White House (went on for 20 years). Last year Obama cancelled it claiming he didn't want to piss off the non Christians.

This past September 25th on Capitol Hill there was a national day of prayer for the Islam religion where thousands attended. So we couldn't have a Christian day for prayer because of non Christians getting upset, but it is ok to pray to Allah and have a day where 50 some odd thousand gather at the capitol to pray. It pisses me off that this has become acceptable to a country that is supposed to be mostly Christian.

I know a lot of people like Obama, but I personally don't see it, he has done so many things that if another president had done it would have caused attention, but he can because of who he is, just don't get it. Everyone has a right to their opinion and I just wanted to put mine out there. I usually don't start things or stir the pot, but this is something that really hit a nerve. Vent over. Sorry so long.

There WAS a National Day of Prayer for Christians. Obama just didn't host an event at the White House for it.

There were events on Capitol Hill just like there were for the Islam Day on Capitol Hill.

You do realize that this ISNT a Christian nation, correct? And that one of the things that the US prides itself on is diversity and freedom of religion? Not everyone IS a Christan and Christianity is not a required part of the running of our government. Yes, you're entitled to your opinion, but maybe a bit more research would have made your opinion seem less ignorant.

I don't think she meant it like everyone in America is supposed to be a Christian, as in they have to. Most people in America claim to be Christians, and I think that's what she was getting at.

This is probably an inflammatory response but, so? I know there are lots of things the current administration has done that can be questioned and argued. But the prayer day? I frankly don't see the big deal. There are lots of religions in this country and we have the freedom to celebrate any or none as we see fit (I don't believe America is supposed to be "mostly Christian"). It's one of the things that makes this country great. I would personally like to see a more distinct separation of church and state. It's not as if the government is telling you you're not allowed to worship.

The article said every year beginning in 2001, former President Bush's calendar was cleared on the first Thursday in May to mark the National Day of Prayer in the White House Smile

I wouldn't expect to go to Russia, China, Mexico or any other country that doesn't speak English and be mad that they didn't speak my language or expect them to conform around me.

It is the fact that he cancels something that has been in effect for so long. Who is he to say that we shouldn't have a national day of prayer. Sure some do not agree with it. I'm certainly not scared to discuss religion. I just didn't want to flame you to high hell for your insinuation that people "should be" (that is the meaning of "supposed to be") Christian. Hopefully it was as the other poster suggested and you meant "supposedly."

So basically you're pissed that Obama is actually practicing a little more discretion with religion than his predecessors? Why should the White House officially support one religion over another? And I disagree that the country was founded on the principles of Christianity. The country was founded on the principles of religious freedom. Our founding fathers were escaping countries where the government and religion were too inextricably connected, to the detriment of all.

That link says that Truman created the National Day of Prayer. Obama certainly didn't stop it or say anyone else should stop commemorating it. He just didn't hold a prayer service that day in the White House.

For those up in arms about this, you do realize that a prayer service isnt actually a functional part of the running of our government, right? You dont have to LIKE Obama, or even agree with him, but it's hard to argue that he hasnt made huge steps in making changes in our countries policies and procedures. That takes a lot of time; time that probably is better spend actually WORKING than hosting prayer services. Especially since, as stated before, we are NOT a Christian nation and there IS a separation of Church and State. I'm glad to see a President who isnt so caught up in ceremony and making church-goers happy that he actually gets sh!t done. There's my flammable opinion.

The point is that the US doesnt have an official language. So "our" language is moot. And I seriously doubt that any of the non-English speaking immigrants in our country are angry that "we" aren't conforming to them. Please.

I am not saying people are supposed to be Christian, let me rephrase this, this country is supposedly mostly Christian. Sorry for the mix in words. It is going off that track of being Christian and I wasn't trying to say everyone is supposed to be one thing or another. That is not my view at all.

So are you actually saying that you believe that the US has an official religion and that there is NOT a separation of Church and State?

I'm not sure how you can call having a Christian prayer service but completely ignoring ALL other organized religions in this country -founded on religions freedom, mind you- is "all or nothing". Aside from the fact that he DIDNT CANCEL the day of prayer. He just didnt HOST a prayer ceremony.
