Costco vs. Sam's Club

We're going to get a membership, as I've heard it's the best way to buy diapers/wipes/misc. baby & kid stuff (as well as a bazillion other things).

We're thinking Costco.... is there any reason you guys think we should consider Sam's instead?

Thanks!

Re: Costco vs. Sam's Club

  • Sam's has more food options, and it also has more variety in diapers.

We had Costco when we lived in Indy - Sams Club and Costco were right by each other so we had a choice.  Anyway, we now only have SC, so we went with it.  I think we both kind of like it better.

  • We don't have a Costco, but I love Sams.  I would get a day pass to each and check everything out before making a decision.  One may have more brands that you use on a regular basis.
  • Before having a child I probably would have picked Costco b/c I like some of their non-essential stuff.  But I would say we definetly use our Sam's membership so much more now, especially since we use Pampers and Sam's has them and Costco doesn't.  I agree with Beth, after looking around more I think Sam's even seems to have more food options that we would use a lot, vs. Costco, it is more b/c it was something different that I bought stuff there.  We have both memberships b/c my dad has a business membership so mine is free to both places.
  • I've been to both, and we're members of Costco.  It is FAR superior.  Yes they have different items -- but at both places, the stock they carry depends largely on whether they can get it at a certain price, so everything is always subject to change (ex - Costco no longer sells my favorite wine).  But at Costco, the employees are SUPER awesome and friendly and so knowledgeable.  It's an overall better shopping experience, IMO.

Plus, it has the bonus of not being affiliated with WalMart and its icky politics.

  • We don't have a Costco, but I know that you can check samsclub.com to see what items your local store carries.

  • I have Sam's and my mom has both, so I go w/her to costco.  I think sam's is a little cheaper membership fee, or at least it used to be.  Is one closer?  Sam's is closer for me, and it seems like it's usually faster to check out there.  The main reason I have it is that my brother lived where there was only a Sam's, so we split the set of cards.

Costco has coupons every month or two, which are on popular products and usually a signifiant savings--like $2-4 off something that's normally $7-12.  They have better selection of prepared foods--trays of things like meatloaf, pasta dishes, salads, etc that you just pop in the oven or serve.

We like certain things that are only found at each one.  Also, do they both have gas stations?  Gas is usually 5-10 cents cheaper a gallon.

This. Every Sam's I've been to is dark, dirty, and the employees suck.

Then again, if you're set on using a certain brand of diapers - Pampers, for example - you should obviously take that into consideration.

I used to feel that way, until we moved here and SC was are only option.  So we went with it, and its like the loveliest place on Earth.  It's clean, the people are so friendly, and there's tons of stuff there.

So definitely check out your local one!

On top of that, there's a Walmart here that is like Target.  I go in and I feel like I'm at Target, which is insane!  I still don't shop there, but I had to go in there once for something specific and I was shocked.

  • Thanks!   Good points ladies.  We'd have to drive to Columbus for either, so I guess we better do some research.

FWIW, we have to shop at Wal-mart because it's all we have in Marysville.  I miss Target, a lot!, and Meijer and stuff, but I've just become resigned to the fact that Wal-mart is my only choice.

    Ditto.

I'm a big fan of the Costco brand diapers and wipes - they've been fantastic for both boys!  I like the organic/natural selection of foods as well.  We used to be members of Sam's Club and I like Costco better.
