Will I be able to get mold out of car seats straps?

I want to donate my travel system, but I noticed the straps of the carseat and some areas on the cover itself have some mold/mildew.

Do you think a bleach/water mix will do it? Any other ideas? TIA

  • Mine, you can completely remove the straps and cover.  If you can remove yours, just wash it with a little bleach (or even skip the bleach and just wash with some vinegar).

Before you go to the trouble, though, make sure whereever you want to donate it accepts carseats.  Most places don't accept used carseats.  You might have the best luck on Freecycle.

  • No! That will not be safe. The straps need to be replaced completely. It is never okay to wash the straps with anything but water (and spot-clean only, they can NOT be fully wet). Straps with mold or mildew should always be replaced.

This just seems so excessive.  What is the risk in getting them wet?!

  • Yah, I agree Jodi.  I wash mine when they get barfed on.  Spot cleaning is a joke when they are soaked through with puke, which has happened several times.

Ya, I'm all for safety, but I really don't think spot cleaning a few areas will make the car seat ineffective?  Will it?   I'd hate to throw it out when I can give it to someone who really needs it . . .

  • You can call the car seat manufacturer and get new straps--they're like $6. Manuals will always tell you to not get the straps wet. So will car seat techs. I wouldn't want my child (or another child) to be the guinea pig to find out if that's true or not. Those straps restrain the child!
