High-Risk Pregnancy

Question for Lovenox/Heperin users

I just found out that my insurance will not cover Lovenox. Even with a doctor note they say that my type (of crappy) coverage won't cover a penny of Lovenox. It's expensive. My doctor ordered 15 shots and it was $460.

My doctor said I could use Heperin twice a day instead.

Has anyone else had to do this?

Turns out I had a chemical pregnancy (my 4th loss) so I don't need the shots now. I'm just trying to get it all figured out before I get pregnant again.

Re: Question for Lovenox/Heperin users

  • From my understanding, you should be able to use heparin instead. I am on Lovenox, but I do have friends that weren't even given the option, and were put on Heparin due to different clotting disorders discovered from repeated losses. Good luck! Hopefully your insurance will cover Heparin, but if not, its at least quite a bit cheaper!!

  • I was on heperin for a while, but stopped and I am so mad b/c i have over a month suplly of heperin shots that i bought but don't use.
  • I think it's fine! Most women who aren't planned for induction or c/s get switched to heparin around 36-37 weeks anyway (I was last time). The only yucky part is 2 shots instead of one and you have to fill the needle yourself (which is easy peasy).

  • You can use heparin, its shorter acting so you have to take more shots than you would if you used Lovenox.  Be sure to supplement PLENTY of calcium if you do use heparin, it depletes.
  • Please also check with mail-in pharmacies.  My co-pay was $500/month with lovenox ($100 with heparin) and I accidentally discovered the mail-in number and now pay $65 for 3 months of lovenox (which when I switch to heparin it will also be $65 for 3 months) which $65 is much nicer than $1500!
  • I was just wondering if you had to take coumadin at all before you were pregnant? and if so did they have you stop the coumadin and start lovenox while trying to conceive? Or did they wait until you had a positive pregnancy test?
  • Thanks for all the info! I will def look into the mail in pharmacy, that's an amazing deal.

Brittany- No, my RE never mentioned this. The only thing I'm doing while TTC is low dose asprin and extra folic acid, B6 and B12. Now I'm thinking I'll get on board with taking calcium.

I see my RE on 4/6 to see what our next step should be so I'm trying to have high hopes she has some magical plan that will equal us having a healthy baby.

  • I meant to tell you I use Medco if that helps.  They are also associated with Accredo.
