Identical Twin Boys - Telling them apart

We just found out we are having identical twin boys!!! :)  We are very excited and would love to hear some suggestions on ways to tell them apart.  I have heard one suggestion to always have them wear a certain color but I really don't want to have them always wear just one color.  There are so many ideas I had for girls but not for boys.  I look forward to your suggestion! :)

Re: Identical Twin Boys - Telling them apart

  • You'll be able to tell them apart easily. I thought mine were fraternal until Pea-kay and a zygosity test told me otherwise. Things we do that make it easier though are keeping our boys on the video monitor with Camera A on Baby A and Camera B on Baby B, but after a few months we could their cries apart.

Your boys may also be different sizes so that could make it easier.

    Congrats & GL!

this. you will be able to tell. there are little differences, M has a pointier ear on his left side, and a tiny birthmark on his back and bottom of his foot. but i can tell by looking at them. no one else can, but i can. :)

  • my plan as going to be to keep 1 baby's toe nail painted.  But, we ended up w/ B/G so didn't have to worry~
  • I have heard of some folks putting a black mark on one of thier heels so that you can tell them a part.

  • We put a pen mark on Lily's heel the first day, but we have always been able to tell them apart.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • You will be able to tell them apart but keep the ID bracelet on until you are comfortable with it.

  • We kept their hospital bracelets on for a few days after they came home.  We also did dress them in blue and green.  Joey in blue... Nathan in green at first.  We painted 1 of Joey's toenails blue too for babysitters at first.  Once we were good at telling them apart we stopped with the color coding for dressing, but it stuck well for bottles (they were on different formulas and having the coding for pre-mades helped).  It still helps today with pacis and sippies.  We rarely dress them that way now.  I don't even think they look alike now though my brother still can't tell them apart and MIL mixed them up while she was watching them the other day (and she watches them 4 days/week).

  • you'll be fine. they probably won't weigh exactly the same. with us, it was hard because two of them weighed the same and those are the two we could have mixed up. (don't think we did, though. ha ha!) but we put hats with their initials on them, and marked the bottoms of their feet, and kept their hospital anklets on.

  • You will be able to tell them apart.  I was worried about this as well, but I don't think there has ever been a time when they were mixed up.  I might call one the wrong name for a second and then they do something or look at you and you know who is who.  People who don't know them or barely know them can not tell the difference.  When they were little and I had friends and neighbors who would help me during feedings and such, I did always dress one in solid colored onesies and one in printed onesies so they knew for sure who they had.  my code---Sam=Solid, Oliver=Other
  • Btw, if it reassures you, the majority of MoMs of IDs that I know swear that their kids "look NOTHING alike" (peakay is one of the few exceptions ;)). So even if it seems hard at first, you will find those differences early on!

    LOL
Girl, that's because you have three of THE most identical multiples most of us have ever seen! But honestly, I do think of you every time I see a mom of IDs claim, "Oh, you'll have no problem telling them apart!" I think it just depends.
