3rd Trimester

My baby doesn't move much

I am trying not to worry, but for the past few weeks my baby hasn't moved much. I go all day without really feeling her and she usually moves around a little at night, but very low and light as opposed to the all-over, forceful kicks I felt before. I don't want to be a hypochondriac and call my DR (I called and went in last week when I didn't feel her for 24 hours and they listened to her heart beat and said everything was fine - that was right at the beginning of her not moving much, so I didn't think to bring it up), but I feel like she should be moving much more. Does anyone else have a baby that doesn't really move/kick or should I be concerned and call my DR?

Re: My baby doesn't move much

  • My baby girl is pretty low-key most days (there are days where she kicks the crud out of me though).  Doc keeps saying everything is fine and as long as I can get her to move (drinking cold water, eating some food/sugar) then I don't worry too much about it!

  • Right around 27 or 28 weeks I had the same thing happen.  I didn't feel much movement at all for a few days.  I called the doctor and they said the same thing as PP.  Drink some cold orange juice and lay still and if I felt some movement it was fine.  They said that feeling will be different based on where your placenta is sometimes.

I wonder if my baby had a big growing spurt in that timeframe and so was pretty calm and just growing.

I will say though, the doctor will not think you are a hypochondriac for calling.  I went in the other day when I didn't feel movement for a full day and they hooked me up and said I could come in anytime I felt different.  So, don't hesitate.  The doctor said she would much rather have me in and tell me everything is fine than to wait and then have something be wrong.

  • Has your LO always been a lazy mover, or is it just suddenly that she started moving a lot less? Also do you know where your placenta is? Sometimes moms whose placenta is in the front feel less mvmt than others. If you're concerned, of course always call your doc!
  • My little girl doesn't really move all that much during the day.  She does move at night and first thing in the morning.  There are some days where she is very lazy.  I have not called the dr. about it because I will get worried and then she will move.  If you are concerned, call your dr.

ETA:  I have an anterior placenta, so I think I feel less movement than most.

  • I just ran in the kitchen chugged some oj and lied down - she moved a little right away. thanks for the idea! They have never said anything about where my placenta is so I assume its not anterior - she used to move a good amount and it is just recently that she has stopped moving so much.

I just wish my next appointment was sooner than later- I may give them a call during office hours tomorrow.

  • My doctor told me if I ever worry about lack of moment to drink orange juice. The sugar should wake them up and have them move for a few more times in an hour. Maybe give it a try and see if it works to put your mind at ease.
  • i had a couple weeks where LO wasnt moving much. i talked to my doc my LO was doing great. she said that as long as i feel her move during the day or at night then i be fine. drink cold drink lay on your side and if she doesnt do some kind of wigging within an hour then maybe call to ease your mind. but my LO has days where i dont feel her move much then days she kicks me like crazy. today i havent felt my LO move much maybe 1-2 times and i had a doc appt and she was doing great! goodluck !
  • My LO would have on and off weeks of movement, but I have an anterior placenta, so it would depend on which way she was facing, whether or not I would feel her.

My baby is very chill and scares me sometimes.  When I tell my doctor about it, she usually listens to the heartbeat and then will put me on the monitor to ease my fears.
  • I had the same thing last week. I hadn't felt him move really for a few days and I was having this strange low pressure. I tried the juice thing and only felt these weird movements that weren't his typical movements. I didn't know if it were a muscle spasm or not.

I was really freaked out and so I called the doctors office and they sent me to the hospital to L&D for monitoring and an ultrasound. He was doing fine, not a big mover even with the glass of juice. His heartrate was good but not spiking with movement too much, but still normal. On the ultrasound they asked me if I could feel him move when we could see him moving a little and I couldn't. I do have an anterior placenta so I guess the position he moved in changed the way I felt the movement. He was really low too and when he would rock on his back a little that would be the pressure I felt.

Doctor also said that I shouldn't worry about regular movement and stronger kicks until 30 or so weeks.

So my point is...talk to the doctor. Have them check you out. You shouldn't have to worry. It will make you feel much better for having checked. At L&D they said I shouldn't even have waited as long as I did, I should have called even in the middle of the night.

  • My little guy does not move around a lot. My obgyn had me go in to the hospital for tests -heart rate and sonogram were not great but ok according to the doctor.  I think the sonogram tech was the one that put me at ease the most. She explained that the babys position could be a big factor as to why I wasn't feeling a lot of movement. My kid was in a C position. head down, booty to the top left and legs on right side. During the sonogram we could see him move around a lot. The tech said that since the baby kicks in towards his face (into the amniotic fluid) and not to the outside I would not feel the movements as much. I could see him stretch his arms, grab his feet but it was all towards the fluid and not towards my skin. So while I saw him move I did not feel him move. I asked my obyn and he said was a good posibility but we still keep an eye on it. I have a sonogram weekly b/c I still don't feel lots of movement but this baby is STILL in the same C shape.
