? for those with video monitors & used more than 1 year

We have the Summer Infant Handheld and have absolutely loved it....until yesterday.  We have used it for about 18 months and I had no idea until doing some research last night that they suggest replacing the battery after 18-24 months of use.  I'm not sure this would have helped the problem though.  I noticed the monitor getting hot when being charged with the AC adapter for the past few days.  Well, last night the plastic casing of the monitor (the part that covers the battery) completely melted and is pulling away from the rest of the plastic if that makes any sense.  It is officially broken and I don't know what to do.  The warranty is for 1 yr only and a replacement monitor from Summer is $100.

I definitely want to get a replacement, but I'm not sure if I should just get a completely different system.  Costco is selling the Levana right now for about $130.  So for those of you who have used a video monitor for a long time with no problems, please suggest your monitor!  TIA!

  • We have a Safety 1st video monitor that we've been using for almost 4 years (August will be 4 yrs) with no problems!

  • We have been using our Mobi video monitor for 2 years with no problems.  But I should mention that ours runs on either AC power or AA batteries.  We almost always just use the AC adapter rather than bothering with the batteries.  I think you should at least call Summer and see what they say- that sounds dangerous!

  • We've had our summer infant replaced under warranty at least 3 times. I love it, when it works, but I'm completely annoyed with it for breaking so many times.

Thanks!  Which Big Lots was this?

  • it was the one in decatur on north decatur road. there were only a few there and they were up on the higher shelves, but i went home with a $50 graco with a portable, belt clip monitor. we tested it out - with our chihuahua as baby stand in - and it seemed to work pretty well. there was a second audio delay, but nothing too bad.
