orajel for teething?

My pedi's website just says Tylenol, but I looked up Orajel online and there are so many different kinds - gel, drops, swabs, cooling cucumber, nighttime - anyone have experience with these?  Does one type over another work better?  Is it just whatever DC will be comfortable with?

Re: orajel for teething?

  • we used the gel and the swabs. the swabs seemed to work better than the gel in that it stayed in place. however, both made him drool like a drugged monkey and he was not a happy camper about it.

we stuck to tylenol. our DCP gave us a very useful tip - rub a drop of tylenol on the affected gum. seemed to work well.

  • Not really answering your Q about orajel (we did use it and it helped a little) but we used infant Motrin for teething more than Tylenol. My sister works for an endodontist (root canal doc) and she said they always tell their patients to take Motrin for the pain b/c it works better than Tylenol.

  • Also not answering your question, but FWIW - the risk of overdose with orajel is much higher than with tylenol or ibuprofen.  We decided to forego orajel for that reason.
  • I've told this story before and it's the reason I never considered orajel. My Dr told me about a pediatrician friend who gave her baby Orajel and the baby died. Orajel numbs their gums and can numb the tongue to the point that the baby suffocates. we've used baby tylenol a few times but mostly just cold teething toys and frozen wet washclothes. DD takes a really really long time for the teeth to cut but I'll never use Orajel.

The pedi's office said they don't recommend using infant motrin until they are 6 months, so I guess I'll have to wait on this.  :(

  • We always used teething tablets instead of orajel, and it seemed to work well. Plus tylenol or motrin, depending on baby's age.

Is it the same for Anbesol?

  • We always used Hyland's teething tablets as well -- they worked wonders when Zach was teething.  And his dentist (yes, we've taken him already) recommends Motrin over Tylenol, if the child is old enough, for teething.

Oh yeah, I forgot that part!

Like PPs said, teething tablets also worked for us.

  • Anything that numbs the mouth poses a risk of choking since it also numbs the tongue and throat.  I'd stick to Tylenol or Motrin.
