Anyone else in this spot? I'm a newly diagnosed celiac and haven't been very good in sticking to my diet since I was told to go GF. Well, since we officially decided to TTC I've been good (not easy though!)
.
Interested to hear your experiences in how it affected TTC and also while you were PG (if you already have a LO). Yes, I'm googling and researching, but it's always interesting to hear anecdotes as well! Thank you!
Re: Celiac and TTC?
I do not have Celiac but I have taken on a GF diet (for the most part..)
Just because I heard it can help with the gastrointestinal S/E of Met, and it may help with PCOS. I just started though and it has been difficult!
Complete surprise!

GF = Gluten Free
Hi! I'm a newbie too. Sorry, GF isn't a TTC or PG term, it means 'Gluten Free'. People with celiac disease must adhere to a strict GF diet, otherwise the gluten causes damage to the small intestine causing diarrhea, malapsorbtion, nausea, cramps, headaches and a huuugge long list of other possible symptoms.
Hi Dober. I was diagnosed with celiac about 4 years ago. For a year I was on a complete GF diet but occationally I would get the diarrhea, hot flashes, stomach pains, bloat, nausea, etc. Turns out I'm allergic to MSG. I still mostly keep to the GF diet because I feel healthier and the chances of me accidentally eating MSG are slimmer. Although I did eat it last week (enchilada sauce) and was on the toliet for two days.
If you have an iPhone the Whole Foods app is my life-line. It has thousands of recipes and tips for celiacs.
GL!
The main issue with being having celiac/TTC is that when you eat gluten, it damages the lining of the intestine, making it difficult for your body to absorb folic acid, no matter how much you take. It will take a while for your intestine to heal enough to be able to absorb it again. How long have you been GF, and have you had a TTC appt with your doctor to discuss it?
I have been GF in the past, as I suspected that I have celiac. But, am back on gluten so that I can get tested for it. Now I just have to find a doctor who is willing to test for it! It's amazing how many physicians don't understand how common it is, and refuse to test
I'm getting an iPhone next month (sooooo excited!) so I'll definitely get that Whole Foods app! I need all the help I can get.
I've been on and off GF since January. My B12 was low b/c of malabsorption, so I wouldn't be surprised if my folate was as well. I've been taking PNV for the past few weeks, and on my GP's recommendation am going to take an additional folate supplement just to be on the safe side. Had my pre-conception checkup on Monday so we talked about it then. Knowing how it can affect conception and fetal development, I'm really buckling down on my diet.
It's definitely a challenge. I've read that the body actually has to "detox" from gluten, and I actually experienced withdrawal symptoms...which were not fun. I hope you are feeling better than I did.
These are a couple of my favorite GF websites, if you are interested.
This woman has an awesome story, and a wonderful outlook on the living GF thing, as well as yummy recipes. https://glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com/
This site has a bunch of restaurants that have GF menus. https://www.glutenfreeregistry.com/index.jsp
Good luck to you!

I don't have celiac, but I am an outpatient dietitian who regularly educates patients on GF diet and consider it sort of an area of expertise for me. I think it's great that you're making an effort to be really strict with the diet. Untreated celiac (meaning you're not GF) can be a cause of infertility, and like someone else said, if you've got damage to your intestinal mucosa, the risk of folate deficiency is high, even with extra supplementation. Plus, long term not following strict GF can increase the risk of intestinal cancers, and you want to be around for your babe as long as possible!!
It's hard, but so important because even a small amount of gluten can cause damage. Patients are always so surprised by that when we talk about it.
Thank you so much for posting - love to hear from the dietitians on this subject (my GP is a bit clueless about it, so I'm doing a lot of self-learning). I've read about even just a miniscule amount of gluten doing damage, so I bought my own toaster, remind DH not to use the utensils for his pasta in mine, etc. The hardest part for me is getting into the routine of preparation - we both have a bad habit of eating out, and when I forget to pack a lunch the options are very limited and I sometimes cave for old favorites which are definitely NOT GF.
Do you think having a cheat day once every couple months is ok?
Me. Have been GF for 10 years. I will help you as much as you need. Have some great recipes. Feel free to PM me.
