Congested Baby...Help Please!

I have noticed the past few days that she has been really congested and it is really noticeable at night.  I asked the Pedi on Monday and she said to just use saline drops and suction out a few times a day.  Well I have tried this many times with three different tools and it does not work.  Do you have any suggestions or tips?  It makes me really nervous especially when she is sleeping at night.  Thanks! Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Re: Congested Baby...Help Please!

  • I read to put saline drops in, then feed them, then try to suck it out. I usually get DS really mad because I have to suck so many times...but it works usually. I admit, I use a tweezers to pull little boogies out if they are right in the opening (I do not stick it in his nose)...the tweezers have saved me a few times. He has some large, green globs sometimes....ew.

I also keep him upright right after a feeding since I realized that sometimes milk travels up there and makes him congested.

DS gets really bad at night too and I thought maybe it was dust or dog fur in my room so I cleaned the heck out of it...and put a humidifier on....sooooo much better the last two days. That's all I have for suggestions.

  • I use Simply Saline mist and then suction out. Works pretty well. If nothing helps, I would call pedi again. She may have a sinus infection.
  • If your LO starts having trouble breathing or runs a temp take him/her in! RSV causes major conjestion.

  • If the congestion gets worse, go see your Pedi, and demand they test for RSV. See my previous posts.

  • My DD got a nasty cold with horrible congestion... she had a stuffy nose for 3 weeks.. not fun.  The only thing that kept her cleared out good was saline spray, and using an electric nasal aspirator.

I took her to be tested for RSV to be on the safe side too after she was sick for over a week.  Just a cold though.

  • It might seem cruel but sometimes you really have to get that nasal aspirator up there to get good suction... obviously you don't want to hurt your LO but we found putting it in a little further got a better seal and better suction.... hope your LO feels better soon!!

  • My newborn son is really congested too. It breaks my heart :( My niece was sick, then I got sick, and now my son is sick. My pediatrician prescribed AYR saline drops...and told us to suction out the mucus with a nasal aspirator. Isaac hates it...but it is making him better. He can breathe and eat better now. (I BF and it has been hard for him to catch his breath while eating) The nasal aspirator I got from the hospital when he was born really works! :) Today my sister bought me a vaporizer and I hope that works too.
