NBR: Sam's, Costco or BJ's?

We have been members of both BJ's and Sams and I'm not thrilled with either of them... however, the few times that we went to Costco's to get prepared food for Duke events (work-related) I liked what I saw.

Has anyone else belonged to all of a few of these stores and would like to share their opinion on which one is the best one to belong to?

We were also considering renewing with Sam's and then splitting the cards with someone who has Costco memberships- that way both families have both cards for one price- your thoughts on that?

  • I have shopped at all of them and hands down, I prefer Costco.

I believe they not only have great prices but a great selection!

Their food is also really good!  We are constantly buying their produce, seafood, cheesecakes, chicken.

I also feel the store is a little cleaner than the other stores.  I don't know if it actually is or it just has to do with the lighting and openness of it all.

    Plus, Costco has coupons!

  • We're a member of BJ's and I love it. They have awesome coupon books that come out often, plus you can use manufacturer's coupons there--I think they're the only club that allows those. I often use a $2 coupon, plus a $5 BJ's coupons on Pampers, which makes them a great price. We like the BJ's brand of stuff too--using their brand of formula saved us a ton. We also use their toilet paper, and some other stuff.

  • YES YES YES to getting both Costco & Sam's and splitting with another couple. We do this with my parents. I like Costco better but there are some things I like to get from Sam's - especially seasonal items.

  • How do you "split" a membership with someone?  Do you have to go shopping with them and then use their card?

They never ask to see ID to go with your card, so you get 2 cards when you enroll at any of the places, then you just switch one of your cards with one card from another couple and then you've got membership at 2 places for the same cost.

This may have worked in the past, however I'm not certain it would now. When we recently applied for our Costco membership, the second card could only go to another member in the household.

Another issue is paying with a credit card with a name that does not match the member's name.  Our Costco membership is in DH's name (I currently do not have one).  I was shopping with DH but he was busy with our son, so I paid with my credit card.  Costco had a problem with me paying since the membership is not in my name.  I'm assuming they are trying to crack down on people taking non-members in and buying items for them.  There are a gazillion ways around that (like paying for cash), but I guess Costco is at least trying to make an attempt to stop it.

I split a membership at BJ's with a co-worker, she opened the membership and said I was the 2nd member. I went on a different day and got my card. I assume they think we lived together, but they never asked me for my address.

  • I LOVE Costco, we typically spend a ton of money there each trip. We just went on Sunday and spent a but load. It is WAY nice than any Sams in the area. Their meat, wine, beer (their brand) are all good, as well as seasonal items, their towels, etc. We really like shopping there and have gotten some good deals. We have an Amex with them and love it, you get cash back on any purchase you use the card for and each Feb they send you a check which you can cash in at Costco or use to buy stuff.

Within the last several years I have belonged to all 3 and Costco is furthest out of the way for us but it is so worth it.  To me, they have better quality and portions of meat, fish and fresh veggies.  Costco is our preference by far.  I think splitting the cards with someone is a good idea and could work out well for you.

  • I've never been a member of Sam's or BJ's, but I LOVE Costco.  My parents have been members & obsessed for years.  & Like previous posts said, my brother & his gf have been able to share a membership with my parents (although my brother & dad have the same name so that helps).  We'd been taking advantage of stocking up on stuff from there while visiting them & within the last 6 months decided to get our own membership.  Like PP said, we love their prices for the basics as well as beer & wine, milk, fruits & veggies & meats (best rotisserie chicken in town!).  Hope this helps!
