Boob News

So my plugged duct is def caused by a pretty big milk blister. This fvcker really hurts. I thought that's what it was this morning when I looked but wasn't sure. The LC confirmed it. Looks like my pump is not working correctly too - it's not producing quite enough suction. I new something was up & called Medela 2 weeks ago, & the rep walked me through reattaching the face plate. That helped but it still didn't seem strong enough. I went ahead & got a rental today till I get that resolved.

So I basically did hot/cold compresses & pumped while massaging all freaking day. I'd pump for 20 minutes every hour. Thank gawd I WAH, although I didn't get much done. Anyway, after doing this for 7 hours I only pumped 3 oz, I was still way engorged & in pain, & Ari had no interest in nursing on that side today no matter what I did.

I pumped with the rental after he went down & I think I popped the bleb at least part way. I could see it bulging & then actual milk came out. I was able to pump 4 oz in 15 minutes. I feel way less sore & look less like Pamela Anderson. So yay!

Oh, & the rental pump is amazing. I wish I could afford the fee & keep it!

Re: Boob News

  • Yay for figuring it out!!

I remember using the pumps at the hospital when DD had to go back for jaundice and they were so freakin awesome.  I wanted to wrap one up and take it home with me.

  • Yay!  I had a milk blister a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty awful.  Once I went after the bleb, I felt immediate relief.  More calcified milk came out the next 4 times that I nursed.

I had to lol at the Pamela Anderson comment.  I always tell DH that I look like I got the world's worst breast implants when I am engorged.  Pretty.

  • DH massaging me was just about the only thing that helped me clear clogs (I had oversupply and got mastitis twice, yikes!). It wasn't pushing DD out of me while DH watched that made me feel totally exposed, it was DH massaging my boobs and pinching my nipples until milk squirted out that did. (Or massaging me while I pumped.) Seriously, you can't really get much more intimate than that.

Castor oil compresseses also helped and so did sitting in a warm bath with the bleb completely soaking, then rubbing it with a wash cloth until it opened. Not a pleasant experience at all, I feel for you.

I've had mastitis twice too. The 2nd time it wasn't full blown but I knew it was coming so I went ahead & called in an antibiotic.

I'll try the warm bath & wash cloth thing tomorrow a.m. if it hasn't popped all the way. It does suck, indeed.

  • Oh, ouch! You might see if your insurance will cover the pump rental... if your OB will write a prescription?
  • I got blebs all.the.time and it caused many, many plugged ducts.  I just used my finger nail in the shower (I knew my hands were totally clean in there) to pick it off.  It never hurt because it was just dried skin/milk.  Once I removed the blebs I could spray milk like 5 ft across the room!  I started checking regularly for blebs.

As for your pump, have you changed your membranes recently?   I had to change my membranes every 3 months to keep my pump efficient or keep enough suction.

  • @Sally J - Yup, fresh membranes. I'm wondering if it's something w/ the motor. Who knows, I'm going to call Medela today.

@Cindy - No insurance coverage. Total BS. I looked into it before Ari was born. They'll only cover pumps if the baby is a preemie & only for 30 days or something.

Hands down (no pun intended) the easiest way to deal with this stuff.  I hated doing it but once it was visible, it saved a ton of pain.  I haven't had one in ages, knock on wood!

  • I had a milk blister in the first 6 weeks of nursing... IT SUCKED BIG TIME. I feel for you SO much! *hugs*
