Did/do you change nighttime diapers during feeds?

XP: Stupid question from a BF-experienced mom (LOL)...

Let me start by saying I have a somewhat red-headed kiddo and his skin is uber sensitive. Like he had blisters on his bum from the super sensitive wipes the hospital gave us. Then I tried Lansinoh, ones for EBF kids. Same disaster. So, after 4 days of no diapers, his skin cleared up. Yes, we washed like 20 bazillion loads of laundry during that time. Anyway, so now we just rinse his bum under the sink when he pees or poops. No more wipes! Why we didn't think of this sooner, I haven't a clue. We never used wipes on DD. Duh!?

So, here's my question... B/c we have to rinse him under the sink and wash his bum with Cetaphil cleanser for EACH diaper change, he screams his head off and hates it. Probably cold. Anyhow, during nighttime... Do you change your DC's diaper each time they wake for a feed? I have been and I think I'm gonna stop. DS wakes every 3-4 hours at night for a feed (not too shabby IMO) and I used to start by changing his diaper, then feeding him (whereby he would usually fall asleep after all of the screaming of the diaper change). Well, last night I was so darn exhausted that I fell asleep without changing him and just whipped out my booob in bed and we both fell asleep. He slept like an angel almost the whole night through (I think they call it dreamfeeding) and we didn't have the screaming of the diaper change. Pleasant. His butt seemed totally healthy and normal, too. No rash. Hmmm.... WWYD?

  • Try it again and see what happens. :o)  Maybe he will be okay and then you can eliminate it.  I didn't usually change her unless she seemed to really need it, poop or very wet!

  • I used to change his diaper during each night time feeding, but I also didn't have to rinse his bottom in the sink.  I think I would try not changing him every time since he seemed to do okay with it.
  • I did a change every other feeding.  Of if I smelled a really good poop in there. I would feed him first and then change a diaper.  Mostly because he was always SOOO hungry that if i changed him first he was so worked up I had a hard time feeding him.

he would sleep through the diaper changes though.  We had a light dimmer in his room so I never had to turn the light on too bright.

  • We pay for expensive diapers so we don't change.  We just smell the diaper and make sure there is no poop.

  • Unless he has a really soiled diaper or went #2 (and he isn't getting a rash),  I would let it ride.

  • I would skip the nighttime changes.  DD also has really sensitive skin and we can't use wipes on her either.  We keep a bowl of water and a basket of washcloths on her changing table and wipe with that.  if you find that you need to do changes, maybe try that instead of the sink since it would be a little less disruptive--only have to move him once instead of adding in the move from sink to changing table.

  • Once DD was big enough to fit in overnight diapers, which was about 2 weeks ago, no. I found that if I tried to let her go all night in her normal diapers that they would leak and she would be soaked, which meant a middle of the night complete outfit change (which of course sucks much worse). I did find that I could change at every other feed in the middle of the night and be OK though.
  • Only if there's poop.  Oddly, DD was super sensitive skin, almost always something on her bum, sadly, but even though I don't change her at night, she almost always looks better in the morning than by evening- even though I change her nearly hourly during the day!  Good luck!

  • I use to always change her diaper whenever she was up, sometimes it was barely even wet.  However, I didn't have to wash her butt everytime.  Could you keep a washcloth and water right next to the changing table and just wipe it, or do you have to wash it?  Sorry, not much help.

  • not sure this will help b/c i ff, but at the newborn stage Carson would eliminate as i fed him so I would feed him first, then change, re-swaddle, jiggle, and put back in the bassinet.

BUT - the whole sensitive skin thing throws things off.  i would say if what you did the other night worked like a dream keep doing it unless he gets another rash.
