How does she know I won't make it to 40 weeks?

Went in for my 34 week check up and while I was talking about the pain I've been in she says to me...you only have 4 weeks left. I said...no, I should have 5-6 weeks left unless she plans on coming early. My doc then says, I'd be shocked if you made it past 38 weeks. Let me also point out that she didn't even do an internal...that doesn't start until next week.

I told my DH and made a comment about why she would think this or how she knows this and he says...because that's what she does every single day. REALLY?!?! LOL!!

Has your doc said anything like this to you? I'm sure its just a guess at this point although it would be nice if she was ready to come out then.

No my doctor hasn't said that and I think its a bit ridiculous that yours did, especially if there isn't any medical reason to believe so...

She really has no idea, lol.

This is your second baby though and they usually come sooner, but honestly... it's up to the baby.

Ask any person on here that is overdue if their doc ever said they'd "go any time" or they'd "deliver early for sure!" They probably want to go back and kick their OB. Poor things.

At my appt the other day the midwife spoke about my EDD moving up by 2 weeks..which would also make me 38.. My office believes in inductions due to size though..

I think my SO would say the same thing "The dr gets paid for that/went to school for that" did she give you a reason as to why you wont go past 38? Just pain?

I have no idea....sometimes I think these doctors like to say things just to say them and don't realize that they might be getting our hopes up. At my appt today, OB said to me, "Well, I'm on at the hospital tonight, so maybe I'll see you later." Umm....huh?

At each appointment from 37 weeks on with DS2, my OB was sure I wouldn't still be pregnant for my next week's appointment because DS2 was already so low and I was progressing regularly. I ended up being induced a couple days before my due date. Doctors can guess all day long as to what your body's progress means, but at the end of the day no one can tell you for sure whether you're going to go at 37 weeks or 42 weeks unless they're inducing you or doing a scheduled c-section.

OBs are crazy. My brother is an OB and has told me there's no way I'm going past my due date because my husband is really tall and I'm really short. WTF? They are randomly guessing -- a dude on the street would have as accurate a guess as your OB.

Yea, it really did bug me that she said that. My last OB never really said that but her NP checked me and said I was 5cm and I would probably go that night. I was so excited but made it to my next appointment and my OB said I was still only at 3cm. I was still 3 days overdue.

I didn't ask her why she thought that but I'm sure she was just talking out her butt.

Ha, at 35 weeks I was told I could go early (they put me on bedrest for a week just in case!) ... Every appointment since has had them saying "Oh, you could go tonight!". I wish they wouldn't do that because I have no problem waiting till 41 weeks, but this constant anticipation fueled by their comments is really annoying. It makes me not want to go to the OB office every week.

I wish they wouldn't say these things as well. It's annoying and I could totally see how someone would become more anxious just by hearing these things and that doesn't help anything!

My OB said - "you're going to wait till I'm back from vacation right?" at which point I'll be 40wks. I said, "nope - the baby will come when the baby is ready to come". He laughed and said he wished he could clone me. I told him I'm anticipating 41 wks and he said that seems like a good plan (but pack your bag just in case).

I had a high risk OB (not my regular OB) tell me that she would be shocked if I made it past March because of my high blood pressure....well my regular OB now says that he is pretty confident I will make it to 39 Weeks..which will be half way through April. I would say they can make educated guesses but I wouldn't say it is set in stone. (unless you have a scheduled C/S)
