Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Let DS CIO last night.........ugh

Background:

We trained at 5 months after DS was over his colicky stage. He was still waking once per night. At his 9 month well check pedi said to stop the middle of the night feedings. So we used Ferber to wean. We were doing well. Down to no formula and then he got 2 ear infections the swine flu, traveled for Christmas and then the croup in January.....then we started dealing with all 4 molars at once. It's been a LONG road. We are all exhausted.

SO......last night we decided to start training aggressively again. DS woke up at 3:15AM whining. So we let him go. He cried/fussed/whined for about 45-50 minutes. Then the screaming/loud crying began. It was so hard to not go in there but I KNOW this is simply a habit we need to break. He has to start learning to put himself back to sleep in the middle of the night. At 4:42AM he finally fell asleep. So it was around an hour and a half total.

How long did/does your LO cry when you were training? I realize training a 15 month old will be alot harder than a 5 month old but this is rough for me.

I am so scared for tonight. I have been up since 3:15am - could not fall back to sleep after all that and I am now zombie woman at work

  • My daughter cries for about as long.  We just started about a week ago...definitely zombie like today at work.

  • good luck, it is tough.  DD cried for a hour the first night and that's it.  she was 10 months.
  • An hour straight? No checking in on them at timer intervals?

No if we go in to check he screams louder and cries longer

  • We don't plan to sleep train DS but from what I've heard of Ferber training you are supposed to keep checking/soothing at certain time intervals not just let the baby cry indefinetly.

I never let DD go that long, especially if she's doing the hysterical tears and snot crying.  Once they get to that point you need to help them calm down and relax again so they can try and rest again.  If DD is just whiney crying I will go in after about 15 minutes and lay her back down and rub her back until she relaxes.

  • At this age, I agree that going in will hinder more than help if you are doing CIO.  Good luck tonight!

  • we sleep trained at 6 months and let her cio b/c she was waking everynight every hour. we tried doing interval soothing and it made her soo much worse. so, we let her cio and it took her 45 minutes of snot nose tears. so hard to do but it was so worth it. it took her 3 nights and now she has consisently been sleeping 12-13 hours a night w/o waking since 6 months( she is 17 months now)  i dont think you should go check on him if it is making it worse. i am sure tonight will be better. it is so hard but it really does work. she is also such a happy kid too so this had no effect on her.

ITA. If we go in when DS is crying/whining, it just upsets him more. Definitely does not calm him down! GL, hope tonight is easier.

I agree.  DS is only 13 months and we are retraining for similar reasons to yours (DS was sick for over a month straight, visitors, etc).  We too do extinction CIO vs Ferber CIO since going in makes it much worse.  We started Saturday-- after 30 minutes of crying DS fell asleep, then woke up at 4am whined/cried/hysterical cried, then fell asleep for about 20 min, by then it was 5:30, so we decided to just be up for the day.  Sunday was better, he cried for 10 minutes to fall asleep, then woke up for the day at 6am (5am without daylight savings).  He cried for about 20 minutes in the middle of the night.  Anyway, we seem to be mostly back on track.  He will still cry when he changes sleep cycles (always has, so NBD) and cries for about 30 seconds when I put him down.

Anyway, good luck tonight!  I think they might learn faster now that they are older and already know what to do.  I felt like a zombie Saturday and Sunday, but yesterday and today, everyone is much more well rested.

This was us.  It should be a little better tonight, and progressively get better.  Good luck!  :)
