3rd Trimester

Do you ask about your urinalysis/ blood results?

The reason I am asking is because I am cursed with having lots of doctor's in my family who ask me odd questions. I made the stupid mistake of mentioning that my blood pressure was slightly elevated to which my darling brothers went off on me about. In order to get them to leave me alone I agreed to call the dr's office and ask "if there was protien in the urine" and if so "what are the levels?" I have already done the stupid finger on the skin test to prove that I am not retaining fluids.

Just wondering if ya'll ask for specifics about the test you take - like blood or urine? Or do you just wait (like I do) for the doctor to tell you if there is a problem with any of the test? I

  • I just see whether they mention it - the no news is good news theory :)

  • I figure if there's a problem my doctor will tell me, so I don't ask.  I assume if he doesn't mention it, everything is fine.

  • The only reason I know my protein levels is because I have pre-e. I am sure if you had pre-e, your doctor would have told you the protein levels because it's important.

  • i ask my doc about what my BP is, and then if i have had tests done I remind him to check the results.  For instance, today I had an appt and I told him that since the last appt we had an u/s, the diabetes drink test and some blood work.  He told me everything was okay- but to make sure I don't skip my vitamins because my iron is on the low side.
  • I always ask for copies of all of my labs. It is good practice to keep copies that way in the future when you need them you have them. I also used to work in a doctors office that he always said he wished his pts. had labs from several years back or from when they were younger so he could look at them and compare the current labs to them. So, if it would make you feel better you could call and just ask them to mail you a copy of your most recent labs/UA and I do not think they would think twice. I know if a pt called me and asked I would not think anything of it.
  • I walk into a lab for my tests and they hand me a printout of the results so on my walk back to the office I skim my results

  • I ask for a copy of all my lab work regardless of the testing being done. Even with my general physician.

  • I always ask, and if I can get copies I do that too. But...I'm also a nurse and like to know the numbers. I know that a doctor can say everything is fine with labs, and yet they may be low or elevated. So I like to know the number myself. Like I said though, I'm also a nurse.

Ok, I get that you have a physical copy of the results but do you know what it means? That is more of what I am asking about not having a physical copy of it. Do you ask about the specific test - like what is normal results versus elevated on the specific tests every time you have blood or urine test done

  • I started asking about my protein levels and my blood pressure when I found out that I had normal/high blood pressure since my first visit and THEY NEVER MENTIONED IT!  Turns out I had chronic hypertention.  Once I was on medicine and everything was under control I stopped asking cause I figured if there was a problem again they would say something. (oh I do still ask them what my BP is because for some odd reason they don't feel the need to tell me) I also ask about my levels when I have 24 hour urine tests and blood work, and I ask about my amniotic fluid and my baby's size...WOW so I guess after all that I can say that YES I do ask!!  But its more for me than for anyone else.

  • I'm a nurse and at first I would ask, now they automatcially just tell me.

IF something was wrong I'm sure they would tell you.

  • I don't ask and I work in the medical field.  I just assume if they are bad they would tell me.  When I was in L&D a few weeks ago I did ask the nurse everything about my bp, labs and all.  I was also worried about everything, whereas when I go to the dr for my appts I'm not too concerned about things.  I do they would tell me if anything was amiss.
  • I don't even have to ask.  The nurse at my OB's office tells me the urinalysis results pretty much as soon as I come out of the bathroom.  Bloodwork or any other tests, they call me with the results the next day usually.
  • They automatically tell me.
  • I don't have to ask.  They tell me the results.
  • They usually tell me, but if they happen to forget (I have ALOT of labs done every month) then I ask.  And they happily tell me.

  • I always assume that they will just call me at home if some labs come back funky.  BUT, I will follow up and ask what the results were at my next appt., just for my own peace of mind.
