3rd Trimester

Being induced tomorrow?

I am being induced tomorrow and I am having mixed feelings about it.  They are only inducing me because I am past my due date, by one week as of tomorrow and their policy is to induce at 41 weeks.  I really want a natural child birth and when I expressed to the doctor today that i was worried about the induction because everyone says the pain is worse the doctor told me just get the epidural.  I am seriously considering not going to the induction.  They have done no tests to show that she is too big or that there is anything wrong with her, I feel like they are just doing it to fit their schedule.  Everyone says I am just overreacting and just get the induction, what do you girls think?

Re: Being induced tomorrow?

  • I completely understand your frustration as I so desperately also want to have everything happen naturally. Although your baby is not too large, or not under any signs of distress, the placenta slowly starts to lose its function the farther past your due date you get. Each Doc will have a policy as to how long they will wait past your due date before they induce. I know with mine, they wont let me go past 41 weeks. While we all want our LO's to be nice and baked, the placenta isnt made to do what it needs to do for too long. (although, personally, I feel like we would all be okay going  a tad past 41 weeks, but I am no Doctor...)

  • Just go for it.....I didn't have an ideal birthing experience with my son as he was a c-section after failure to progress during my induction.  After a week past your due date, I think it is really time to get things going before the baby gets too big and fluid levels start dropping.  Just keep an open mind, and get the epidural if you are in pain.....it truly is a lifesaver!
  • You do not have to be induced if you don't want to. Ask your doctor exactly what you asked us- Can they do an u/s to check baby and placenta to make sure everything is still ok? Can they order an NST for you? Ask exactly what the risks are of waiting a few more days... even if you decide to go ahead and get induced, I think you'll feel better having the answers to all of these questions, knowing you tried everything you can.

I've been there too, with DS. I was 41w 1d and nothing was happening. We had an NST and baby was doing great, so they gave me cervadil to try to get my cervix moving and nothing happened. No dialation, no softening, no effacement, nada. I ended up with a section because they didn't think I was a good candidate for an induction. I was upset, because I wanted to go all natural too... if you have any questions or want to chat, page me.

    GL and hugs!

  • Going overdue is a valid reason for an induction, so if inducing at 41 weeks is your doctor's policy, it's unlikely that they're just doing it to fit into their schedule.

I don't think it'd be a good idea for you to just not show up for the induction. If anything, I'd suggest calling the doctor and relaying your concerns. I don't think worrying about the pain is enough reason to delay the induction if it's standard practice for your doctor, though.

  • first of all, it's absolutely your choice, so do what you feel is the right thing.  however, my doctor has the same policy and doesn't let anyone go past 41 weeks because the placenta can begin to break down and lose its function.  i think that's probably something to consider.  either way, GL, i hope everything works out! :)

  • I'm also being induced tomorrow night and am pretty terrified that it's going to end up in a c-section.  But, my doctor's office will not let me go past 41 weeks.  I trust that they know what they're doing, so I'm going along with it.  For me, it's not worth the risk of something happening to the baby just so I can avoid being induced.

  • I would listen to your dr. I was induced at 41 weeks- 10 days overdue. My dr really wanted to me to go on my own but it didn't happen. I am very glad that I was induced when I was b/c there was meconium in the fluid when the dr. broke my water. There were two nurses in the room with me at delivery besides the labor nurse and the dr. If she would have swallowed the fluid, who wants to think of what could have happened. I had an extremely healthy pregnancy and there was no way of knowing that there was meconium in the water. Also, as you go past your due date, the placenta starts to lose its function. The contractions were worse with the pitocin, but in the whole grand scheme of things, all you really want is a healthy pregnancy. I would really listen to your dr on this one. GL!!

    I meant, "healthy baby."

  • i would go with what your dr. is recommending.  births usually never go as you want or imagine them to be.  try and just relax tonight and enjoy the process (whatever it may be!)  congrats and good luck :)

  • Thanks ladies, i am going to go in tomorrow and try to be happy and focus on the fact that I will be meeting my daughter tomorrow.  I am still nervous but I think it is for the best to listen to the doctor.  I will keep everyone posted
