leashes for toddlers?

What's your thought? We are enroute to Disney and considering getting one for N. I used to think they were horrible but now I see the use.... What do you think?

Re: leashes for toddlers?

  • lol I can't tell if you are asking seriously ;o)

eta: only said because of the links below and previous "drama"

  • for a place like disney or an airport i would absolutely consider one. just know you may get looks or comments and be prepared to deal
  • depends on the kid. I don't think we'll need one for K. But she doesn't really run off on us. i have friends with kids who do/did...and I totally understand the need for a leash in their case, and would use one if my kid was that way too.

  • If I were going to Disney with DS (who is a super quick little Houdini like escape artist), I would absolutely get one.  I never thought I would say that- but I think there is a time and a place and a personality type/degree of agility where leashes are not a bad idea.

  • I don't like them for every day use. I think that's lame. You should spend enough time with your kid and teach them to behave enough that they don't require a leash. That said, I think they are appropriate for occasional use. For example, Disney Land / World (or any other theme park type place). It's a huge place with so many distractions and other kids that they are extremely useful. I also think they're good if you're going somewhere that would be dangerous for your LO to get away.
  • Completely serious here and oblivious to any drama as I hate the bump on blackberry. And yes - just for rare ocassion use like at the parks and airport. N is a runner and thinks it's a game still (working on the holding hands). I don't care what others think or say... I can hold my own... So if they have them at the park we'll be getting one. I'll have to look at the drama posts when I'm home... :)
  • If there was anyone place on this planet where a "leash" would be appropriate Disneyland is it. When we go next month, I will be taking one for DS.
  • The drama was a day or two ago so it would be hard to find it. I have to admit I laughed out loud for real when I saw the title but only because of the leashplosion from 2nd tri the other day! I wouldn't get one but only because I hate them with the passion of a million fiery suns and when I see them being used for every day use, I totally judge in an amusing way in my head. All that said - I wouldn't bat an eye seeing them in use at an airport or a mega theme park. I'm sure some people will give you the side eye but as a huge Disney World addict, I can guarantee you won't be close to the only one using one. If it makes you feel better and it doesn't bother you, then I'd get one.

  • I'd absolutely use one especially at Disney. DS knows to hold hands but when he gets in a mood or completely enamored with another kid or animal he's gone faster than I can blink and he thinks it's a game still with the teaching we've been doing. Although for him, Disney might be so overwhelming he'd be very happy in his ergo.
  • we just got back from disney and i saw them in use on a few kids. not nearly as many as you would think, but some.

i have the opposite problem--lucy stands so close to me that i often trip over her or can't see where she's at if she's standing under hudson (in the ergo). can't tell you how many times i have knocked her down!

i say bring the leash if your kiddo is a runner. it will give you peace of mind and be able to enjoy yourself a little bit more.

  • Not Disney but I went with three friends all with kids and brought a kid myself (I borrowed one) to the fair last year.  3 had leashed and at one point I was going to be responsible for all four kids.  I attached the leashed to caribeaners and attached those to my belt loop.  For 45 minutes I felt like an octopus, but I didn't lose a single kid!

It really was a fun sight.  I got lots of looks and most people were amused, not disgusted.

Btw, I have no idea why I couldn't type "leashes".  Seriously... leashed?  Every time?  I blame the vicodin!

  • I have one for very occasional use (airports, malls, Disney, etc).

In so much as I don't give a flying flip if others agree or disagree with my parenting choices (such as CDing, scheduled medically-necessary c-sections, and *gasp* formula feeding), I also don't care if they like my use of Mr. Monkey (the "leash").  I am making those choices for a reason -- to take the best care of my child.  If someone has a problem with that, I encourage them to tell me directly.  I'm happy to discuss -- particularly today, as I am a raging PMS-monster.

  • Coming from a not-yet-mommy, I wouldn't give you dirty looks at all. I know there is some debate over them but I think that is only b/c of people labeling leashes as something used for dogs and therefore you are treating LO like a dog. Weird mentality. I think it gives LO freedom to run but still be safe. When I was little I absolutely would NOT hold my Mom's hand. I was a good kid and she tried hard to discipline me, but I just had too much I wanted to see/do.

Although, I will say I saw something really funny once.....a super nouveau riche lady had her kid on her leash and was carrying her ridiculous mini-dog. That was a bit much, LOL

  • I tried it and in theory it's great...in application not so much. Ds would just run to the end of it and then fall face first on purpose and lay there laughing. That paired with pushing the giant double snap and go with the twins got me lots on unwanted attention.

  • We've only used the leash at the airport and it was a lifesaver.  DS is a runner and there was no way I would have been able to get him to hold my hand the whole time.  We actually got a ton of stares, but mostly "look at the cute little guy" not judgey at all.  For Disney, I'd totally use one.
