Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone not use Formula or BM?

I have been "blessed" with a milk allergy my whole life and I am afraid DD will have one as well. At her 4 month doc appt I asked the doctor if I needed to start her on formula what/how do I start. ( I EBF and pump at work, but having a hard time keeping up with her)_.  He asked if my husband or I had a milk allergy and of course I told him I did. So he gave us soy formula. I've heard so many negative things about soy that it makes me nervous to give this to her.

I let my mom know about this and she suggested Goats Milk, she gave it to my little brother instead of formula since he was 6 weeks. So my question is, Have your heard of anyone having an alternative to formula and BM?

  • Holy nuts....I'd clear that one with your pedi ASAP before trying.  You might be nervous about the soy, but I'd be way more nervous about the goat's milk.  Never heard of using that for an infant under age 1.

  • I think this is definitely something you need to speak with your pediatrician about. They will likely tell you to absolutely not give your daughter anything but breast milk or formula. What was acceptable back in "the day" is not always considered to be a good idea now, though I'm sure your mom means well :)

  • What about Nutramigen or Alimentum? Those are for babies with Milk and Soy allergies, so I'd try that before goat's milk.

  • Okay, I was very curious so I did a quick google search - here is what I found:

Parents of babies allergic to cow's milk and other commercial formulas often ask if it's safe to use goat's milk as an alternative. In theory, goat's milk is less allergenic and more easily digestible than cow's milk, but it should not be used as a substitute for infant formula. Like cow's milk, it can cause intestinal irritation and anemia. If your baby under one year of age is allergic to cow's milk-based formulas, try either a soy-based formula or a hypoallergenic formula. If your baby can't tolerate either soy or hypoallergenic formulas, in consultation with your doctor and/or a pediatric nutritionist click here for goat's milk formula recipe.

You wouldn't just give the plain goats milk, you'd have to create your own formula. Definitely only do this while working with your pedi. I would try a regular formula and see if your DC tolerates it before you did something like this.

  • Goat's milk is NOT an alternative to breastmilk or formula.

    Here's a good link: Got Goat's Milk?

That link does have a recipe to make your own formula using goat's milk as  a base.  But plain goat's milk (or cow's milk!) is not nutritionally sufficient for babies.

Here's a good link from Kellymom about formulas.  If your LO already has a family history of allergies, the best possible thing is to continue breastfeeding if at all possible, but I'm sure you know that.

  • Ditto PPs.  Definitely work this one with your pedi. I'd put in a call in anyways as I believe that babies with milk allergies also frequently have soy allergies

  • Thanks for the input ladies... I want to continue to try and BF for as long as possible and hopefully will never have to worry about it, but I was curious and concerned for if I ever need to supplement, thanks again. I will continue doing some research to see whats best for my DD.

  • someone asked about this at my BFing class and the LC said she had never heard of it and would never recommend it. id stick to soy before even considering anything else

  • Babies who are allergic to the dairy protein are also allergic to goats milk. Did your pedi give you a list of bad stuff?

    Google MSPI diet.

It isn't bad once you get a few things figured out!

    GL!

  • Both my brother and I were on goats milk.  My brother couldn't even tolerate rice formula (mom breastfed us for around 4 months but with both of us she dried up around that time).  I was trying to find the website for it, you can order it online.  She put something else in the milk though, I will call her and find out what it was.

  • I know of a number of people who use goats milk, and we're considering doing it.  do your own research before you decide not to - it's definitely not mainstream, but that doesn't mean its bad.  a lot of peds also probably aren't educated about it, so don't be afraid to make your own decisions.  good luck.
  • Has your daughter been checked for a milk protein allergy.  I would figure out if she is actually allergic before worry about the next step.  I know you have one, but your daughter might not.
