Is 6 wet diapers/day a hard and fast rule?

Hi Ladies,

I posted last night about dirty diapers, so of course today I'm worrying about wet diapers.  DS has eaten 5 times so far today, and has only had 1 wet diaper.  He doesn't look dry, fontanelle isn't sunken, and he's perfectly content, but my little "breastfeeding book" from the hospital says after day 5 he should be having 6 wet diapers/day.  Yesterday he only had 3.  Should I be worried?  Do your LOs of comparable age have 6 wet diapers every day?  TIA!

Re: Is 6 wet diapers/day a hard and fast rule?

  • Well, that does seem a little bit odd.  I would expect more wets than that. BUT, I cloth diaper and so change a lot more frequently than those who use disposables.  If he's eaten 5 times with only 1 wet diaper I would probably call the nurse line to see if they thought anything was amiss.

  • I'd call your pedi's office and ask them.  Even since it's the weekend.  Fluids in generally = fluids out, so I'd be somewhat concerned.  I'd at least want to ask a health professional at the very least!

  • I agree, it's worthy of a call to the Pedi for sure.
