I've heard Gala apples work well. I make most of J's food but buy the natural applesauce. It doesn't have any added sugar and I found it to be more cost-effective than baking my own apples.
I've used a bunch of types and DD has liked them all, so I can't think of any specific names. About a month ago I stopped making apples though and now I just give DD the no sugar added apple sauce.
The sweet apples are the best. Gala, Pink Lady, Honey Crisp, etc.
Don't use granny smith or other baking apples b/c they don't puree as well. Mason eats a small pink lady apple with breakfast every morning and I just boil it with a little cinnamon in a small saucer until I can mash with a fork.

apples are part of the "dirty dozen" so it's recommended you go organic. and, its cheaper to buy organic apple sauce than a bunch of organic apples.
whole foods has a big thing of organic applesauce (only ingredient is apples) on sale for only $2.99 right now.
