Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone's 21 month old talk in their own language, without many real words?

My DS will be getting Speech in about two weeks but I was curious to know if any others are out there doing the same?  He has about 5 words but has his own language going on where he knows what he is saying.  He will point to something and say ahhhdoooo baaaa coooo doooo - LOL, you know what I mean, something along those lines.  Straight up conversation with you but no clue as to what he is saying :)  The ST did say this is great and is what usually comes before all the real, understandable words.

Thanks!

  • My 19-month old does this.  She has a lot of words, though, but uses them only one at a time, and then does her own babbling jargon like you're talking about.  She goes up to other kids and does it and they just stare at her!

I'm also a speech therapist, and it is a good sign that your LO is doing this. Sounds like he has a real desire to communicate and I bet he will do great with a little push!

  • that was dd1. 100%. she had a few more words, but overall spoke in her own way.

i would even say "what? repeat that" and she would say the entire paragraph over verbatim in her own language. so i knew it MEANT something :) her receptive language was great so i never worried.

by 2 she got a ton more words and then was a completely different child by 2.5 in the vocab dept :)

  • My 21 month old still does this- even though she knows a ton of words.

she just goes off into paragraph long babble with a ton of different sounds, moving her hands, etc- like she is giving a freakin speech to the world. Looks straight at you and then finishes it with 'CAT' -- or some other random word.

I just look at her and go, 'really now? you don't say.' -- and laugh to myself. she uses her words plenty- so i don't worry. and honestly- i think one day i will miss her babble speeches.

  • My 24 month old does this.  He is in speech therapy (for about a month now) and has quite a few words, but definitely speaks his own language. And definitely means what he says.  I do think it is adorable though even though I wish he was fluent in English too. :)

  • My DD does this too.  It's hilarious.  In fact, the other day she tripped over her little stool and she started scolding it in her own language.  For at least two minutes, just absolutely giving the stool hell.  I was laughing so hard.

She's definintely started saying more actual words (I'd say 20-30) but talks in her language a lot of the time.

  • Brendan does this too, it cracks me up.  I would really love to know what he is saying. The only understandable word is Yeh.
  • DD has a lot of words that are not strictly Spanish or English (the languages she is exposed to on a daily basis), but they are definitely distinct words that she uses correctly and that I now understand. For example, she says "bapa" for diaper and generally uses this to tell me she needs a diaper change or if she is looking for her baby doll's diaper. She also calls my pads and tampons "bapa" when she sees me using them.

There are many more words I haven't quite gotten the meaning of yet, but I treat the experience of having a toddler like that of traveling in a foreign country. Eventually, things start making sense in context if you hear them enough.
