NBR: Do you wear knockoffs?

I work at a high school and name brands are all the rage here.  I'm one of those people who does like specific name brands, but I just can't compromise and buy a knockoff.  I like my brands for the brands themselves, but the craftsmanship is really what sets the brand apart (usually).  I also hate the fact that these people's designs are being stolen.  I have two students in my class right now and one has a fake Gucci bookbag and another one has a fake Coach bag.  They even go so far as to buy Jordan and Air Force I shoes from the flea market.  I know that this is not just an issue for teenagers though because I see grown women walking around with knockoff Coach and Gucci.  If I can't afford a real one, I just won't have it, but I CAN'T make myself buy a fake.  [Poll]

Re: NBR: Do you wear knockoffs?

  • I love Chinatown in NYC...they have great stuff.
  • Loading the player...
  • Not voting...  I really don't pay attention to most labels.  I am picky about shoes that I wear since feet are important - but other than that I don't care.  I am home w/ my kids, so no one really cares what I am wearing anyway!!
  • I own a few knockoff D&B purses, Coach purses, and other things. It doesn't bother me at all.

  • It depends on the item...DH is usually very picky and doesn't like me buying the knock offs since he'd prefer to buy me the real deal (henceforth the matching Coach purse and wallet I got for Christmas/Birthday a few years ago)
  • Honestly, I don't care enough to buy the real or the fake ones..

I voted depends..sometimes knockoffs are sooo bad you can tell other times its really hard..I honestly do not like most of these brand name things anyway (I think coach is plain ugly) but there are some others if I found good knockoffs for cheap I'd probably get.. However I dont live close to NYC anymore :)

  • Let's just say I shop at Ross, Old Navy, Kohls, Payless Shoe Source, etc.  I can't jsutify spending more that $15 on Sunglasses that I'll just scratch up in my purse or car, love BOGO days at Payless shoes and will never spend more that $20 on a purse.

  • I don't understand the concept of trying to look like you spent a lot of money on something.
  • Personally am not a name brand kind of gal for which I am very thankful since it saves me A LOT of money.  I left all that behind in high school.  I do like certain brands because of the quality.
  • It depends on what I am buying.  As the PP mentioned, I am really picky about shoes because it is important to wear something good on your feet.  On the other hand, most of my yoga pants are some generic brand from Target because I couldn't imagine dropping a ton of money on some color coordinated yoga outfit to wear when I am exercising.

  • I should say this though...  I do buy things that aren't name brand.  An example:  I do like Coach purses and own several and would NEVER buy a knockoff on purpose, but my purse doesn't HAVE to be Coach for me to carry it or even like it.  Target has some very cute bags.  I'm specifically asking if you would buy a knockoff to make it look like you have the real thing.

  • Nope.  When I was younger I did because I thought it was "cool" to have a lot of name brand looking things and not have to spend the money on them.

Now I prefer to get the real thing and just limit how many I buy.  I'd rather have 1 real purse than 10 knock-offs.

  • I personally am a Coach whore and I love my designer sun glasses but I am very blessed that I can now afford these things especially since I grew up very poor. There are a lot of women who like the look of a Coach or LV but cannot afford the hefty price that comes with it. I am not going to begrudge someone their knock off just because I feel that only the real thing should be purchased. If they like it more power to them.

  • I am a label snob, if I can't afford the real deal then I get something else. Big Smile

This is me exactly.  I can't bring myself to pay full price for name brand things.  I do like them so I tend to shop at the places listed as well as Nordstrom Rack but, if I can't afford it I don't need it...  And to be completely honest, 95% of the time I don't need it even if I find it discounted...

  • never.  i'm with you.  if I can't afford it, why bother?

plus, i can spot a knock-off from a mile away.

ME TOO!!!  It just makes me sick.  It doesn't have to be name brand to be nice but the fake ones are awful.

  • I happen to think that D&B, Gucci, and most Coach Purses are kind of ugly and would never pay that much money for one. I don't like the logo's. That being said I do have a real Coach purse, leather without all the C's, and also a fake patchwork one that I bought in the LA fashion district that has very minimal logo. I think it is usually obvious when a purse is a fake, and don't understand why anyone would want to carry a fake of something ugly anyways. As far as knock-off clothing goes, I definitely buy "knock-offs" I like fashion but I don't have money just lying around that I can spend $75+ on a shirt so I look for an off-brand that looks similar. I am EXTREMELY picky about shoes though, I don't compromise

    This exactly.

Plus, on the comment about the quality of certain brands - I think that's BS.  Sure, some knockoffs are extremely cheap, but expensive price tag does not equal quality at all.  I used to work at J Crew which i think over chargers for it's clothes by a ton.. But I had a lot since I got crazy employee discounts.  One year later, all those clothes are garbage, completely fell apart.

  • I don't care about name brands.  I buy what I like as long as it's within budget and within reason.  To my knowledge, I don't have any knockoffs because I really just stick to buying stuff at department stores and mall boutiques.

  • If I liked Coach, Gucci, LV, or D&B, I would not buy fakes. I would buy the real thing, because, yes, you can *usually* spot a knock-off, and they aren't nearly as well-crafted. My sister loves "expensive" purses and has a few of each of these brands. The quality is quite nice, they are just NMS.

However, I do LOVE Vera Bradley. The are less expensive, but for some reason they still make knock-offs of them. If I want a Vera Bradley, I will save up that $50-$100 dollars and buy one, but I would never get a fake. The reason I love Vera Bradley is because of their quality, durability (I'm not scared to scratch or spill something on my purses), and then looks.

    With clothes, I wear whatever!

  • I avoid knockoffs or the real thing.  I don't like to have clothing or other items that are so obviously a specific brand.  I've always been this way.  I avoided all of the shirts with logos when I was growing up because I didn't want to look like everyone else.  I have no problem buying a good brand of something, but I don't want to be a walking advertisement.

ETA:  I should also add that my husband is a trademark attorney and would never allow me to buy a knockoff even if I wanted to.  He is very against it.  However, it drives him crazy that I refuse to let him buy me a Coach bag, he has wanted to for so long, but I know I won't want to use it.

  • I don't give a crap about designer stuff as far as fashion, but I'm kind of a brand whore for things like hiking boots and backpacking gear. I like to think it's because I've grown to trust those brands as providers of quality items, but I'm sure some of it is just because I like to think I'm a hella cool camper.

I don't get it either...and honestly unless it grossly obvious, how can you tell it's a knock-off?? My cousin bought his wife a couch purse from the coach store two years ago for Christmas and within a month the damn thing was falling apart.  And she had to take it back to the store and wait almost a month to get it repaired.  I don't think brand names last any longer than a non-brand name.

I'm sporting a Vera Bradley purse right now! Of course, my MIL bought it for me for Christmas, I don't usually by myself that kind of stuff!

  • Personally, I have purchased knockoffs from time to time, but I can't really show up to the office with them, as I work in the intellectual property law field and knockoffs are trademark violations!!  A coworker came in with a fake Louis Vuitton bag and never heard the end of it.

  • Brands matter to me and if I can't afford it I will get something else. My DH hates it if I even get near a knock off item. He will always get me what I want anyway.

First off I love your dog.

I personally love Coach and have never had a problem with any of mine. I purchased my first coach 6 years ago and it still looks brand new and it has outlasted my sister knock-off by about 5.5 years. I do agree that price doesn't always equal a good product or a superior product. My Coach purses have lasted longer then my normal no-name purses by quite a few years which is one of the reasons why I like them. I will not however purchase a LV. Apart from the fact that they are hideous I cannot see anything different in the leather or the craftsmanship then in a  Coach.

  • No way, no way, no way.  Part of my work is doing trademark and trade dress law, and I really, really strongly believe that trademarks are special and should be protected.  I would never support trademark violations like knock-offs.
  • I don't care about the brands, so no, I don't wear knockoffs, but I also don't spend the money to get the real thing, either.

  • I have a lot of designer only because it's durable and I love the quality of it. I go for quality. I would never wear a knockoff.

  • To me, if you wear knock-offs, it means you are only interested in the brand to show others you have it.  Otherwise there's no reason to have it.

I don't buy knockoffs b/c they're crap quality and it defeats the point.  I'd rather spend $100 on an Ann Taylor bag than $50 on a knockoff Coach...  Showing off that I have the "right" brand isn't high on my priority list. If I want a high-end designer item, it's b/c I want that item - not b/c I want to look trendy.

  • I will not do knockoff handbags ever.  Handbags are sort of my thiing and I have quite a few designer bags (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Fendi, Kate Spade, etc).  I am actually totally frugal when it comes to other things, but I love bags.  I don't really care if other people do though.

LV is disgusting, and waaaaay more expensive than a Coach bag.

When I was in California shopping for some new Fall Coach totes for school (because IMO and experience, they are in fact durable, comfortable and cute) I stopped into a LV with my DH's friend's wife. She loves LV and was contemplating getting this purse that looked like pleather, was shiny and glossy, and maroon. It was hideous! But it was still $1,200.00. No thanks.

Coach is expensive, yes, but I don't think it compares to LV. I couldn't justify $1,200.00 unless I was a millionaire.

ETA: Sorry to the ladies who are LV fans. On the bright side, I have seen scarves from LV that I adored, but they were $900.00.

  • No, I would never buy a knock off.  Mainly because they are tacky and I can spot a fake immediately, I can even spot a bag that was purchased in an Outlet store like Coach as opposed to a retail store, based on the leather, color and style of the bag.

I don't want to contribute to organized crime, terrorism and more than likely the bag was made by young children working in terrible conditions violating child labor laws.

If you buy knock-offs, you should really read this.

This.  I prefer to have money in my purse, not have a really expensive purse without a spare nickel inside.  And as long as my clothing is neat and fits me, I could give a rat's azz what the label says.
