I think it depends on your diagnoses. Typically RE's recommend 3-4 IUIs before IVF, but if your diagnosis is something that lowers your odds of success for IUI significantly (or at all), many people do move onto IVF sooner.
That said, we did 4 IUI's.
We are adopting! Currently waiting for our domestic infant adoption match.
We did 6. 5 were with our first RE, but he retired. My 3rd one was a BFP, but I had a m/c. We did 2 more with him after that and 1 with our new RE. Now we are headed to IVF. I have PCOS and DH has MFI, but no it appears it's way worse. I almost wish #3 hadn't worked then we would have done IVF sooner. My plan was only 3 and somehow we did 6.
Good Luck!

IVF #2 Aug 2011 is a BFN:<
IVF #3 March 2012 is a BFN
Not sure what to do now. Sad and lost.
do you have insurance or are you OOP? Sometimes your insurance will require you to do a certain number of IUI's before moving on to IVF. Mine made me do 2.
our insurance required 2 IUIs prior to IVF... however, our RE talked to them, and had them rescind that decision, because we only have 1.8 million sperm before wash, and IUI wouldn't have worked.
So, we did no IUIs prior to IVF.

We did two treatment cycles with TI and 6 with IUI. FWIW, I've been pregnant twice from non-ivf treatment.
Most docs recommend giving a protocol 3 chances to work. Unfortunately, some times you just end up on the wrong side of the odds, even when things are "perfect."

This and it also depends on your situation if you're OOP. We did one IUI which was canceled due to my response and being at risk for HOM. IUI just wasn't really an option for us.
We did 8 IUIs. The first I suppose can be considered "successful" (ended in m/c) which is why we had so many... it worked once! After the 8th, doc ran even more test, and we were finally diagnosed with slight MFI.
We are now on for IVF #1, after 1.25 yrs of on and off IUIs

i just did IUI last month and it was a BFN. after seeing some people siggys and seeing multiple IUIs with no BFPs, is it worth it to just go to IVF?
You're not likely to see BFPs in people's siggies over here, since everyone here is still in the trenches... you might want to cross-post this over on Success After IF (SAIF) and see how many people were able to get a BFP from IUI. That will give you a better idea of success than here at IF. Good luck!

We did 3 IUIs and now are moving on to IVF. B/c of my DH MFI they had recommended that we do IVF right away but we weren't emotionally ready for it but now we are!!!!!
Good Luck!
TTC#1 since 7/07 with MFI and Endo/PCOS
IUI #1 and #2 with 50mg of clomid= BFN
IUI#3 with 100mg of clomid and Bravelle= BFN
Lap surgery 11-18-09= found Stage IV Endo
Three months of Depot Lupron Shots and adding 2000mg Metformin
IVF w/ ICSI May 2010 = BFP, M/C at 6 weeks
Break to lose weight, down 60 pounds and gearing up for IVF #2 in August 2011
We did 5 (3 Clomid; 2 injects), but the 2 injects were insurance mandated.
Did you ask your RE for an opinion? Mine came out and recommended that we move to IVF as soon as insurance allowed it b/c of the increase chance of success in our situation.
TTC since April 2009
dx = PCOS;
TTC History for DS - A FET miracle after 7 IUIs; 2 fresh transfers, and 1 other FET resulted in BFNs.
Hoping and Praying for baby #2:
Cycle 1 - FET; November 2012 BFN
Next Steps - who knows?
We did 5 IUIs; got a BFP after the second, m/c'ed, did another IUI which didn't work, had a break cycle BFP, then m/c'ed again, then did two more IUIs with no sucess. We wanted to make sure we weren't throwing good money towards IVF when IUI had worked, but after the losses and $ and time, we figured we should just go for it. Also, my clinic recommended going to IVF after three IUI failures.
1st IUI was successful- we have a wonderful 2 year old- then we started trying again and had 4 unsuccessful cycles so we moved to IVF. We knew IUI worked once so we thought it would work again. Looking back I probably should have went to IVF earlier but it seemed like a big scary jump... but it really hasn't been bad. best of luck!
We are number #4 and will do a 5th if needed. When we first began I said 3 but I really want to do as many so if we do IVF I will know this route did not and was not going to work.

It definitely depends on your diagnosis. Since I am unexplained we did 4. One with clomid and 3 with Follistim
I know that some girls dealing with MFI will jump right to IVF because they have the best odds with that.
We also unexplained and had 4 IUI before trying IVF. Mainly becuase our insurance covered all our IUIs but little to none of our IVFs
IUIS 1 & 2 were BFN, 3 was a c/p, so we knew when 4 didn't work it was time to move on.
We did 3 IUIs and now are moving on to IVF. B/c of my DH MFI they had recommended that we do IVF right away but we weren't emotionally ready for it but now we are!!!!!

My RE wanted us to go right to IVF, but my insurance company required "up to 6 failed IUI's" before they would approve moving to an IVF.
They were satisfied withmy RE's notes, etc from IUI#1, and let us move onto IVF.
1st IUI was successful- we have a wonderful 2 year old- then we started trying again and had 4 unsuccessful cycles so we moved to IVF. We knew IUI worked once so we thought it would work again. We did 3.
I think it's worth it to do 3.
IVF is way more involved than IVF. Especially if you're unexplained, I would give IUI another try. (The siggys with the BFPs are on SAIF.)
