Parenting after a Loss

So sick of the cord stump!

I feel like she's never gonna lose it! It wouldn't be so bad if it was a nice little raisin like most cord stumps, but Kaygan's is an inch long, if not more! They left it long for her NICU stay, in case they needed to put an IV into it (did you know they could do that?).

Now, the long part is all dried up, but the under the skin part still has a ways to go. They told us it would take longer for hers to come of than most babies, since they didn't start alcohol on it till she was  3-4 days old, but I'm so sick of it! I worry that it will catch on her clothes or hurt her if we put her on her belly. I asked them to cut it back a bit before we left the hospital, but they wouldn't.

Mostly though, I really want to give her a bath! We didn't get to be there for her first bath in the hospital, and I just want to be able to do something with her like that! I feel like we missed out on so much, and I still don't feel like a mom sometimes and I wonder if that's the reason. I think being able to give her a real bath would help for some reason!

OK, whine over!

  • We were told in the hospital that even though LO had his cord stump, we could tub bathe him.

I hated his cord stump.  Not much grosses or freaks me out, but his cord stump did.  ICK!

  • LO had an IV in hers in the NICU, once the IV was out, at 7 days it took 1.5 weeks to fall off.  It was fully off at 2.5 weeks, she left the NICU at 3 weeks old.  FWIW, she got tub baths w/it, just don't fill the tub up all the way.

I am sorry you aren't feeling like her mother.  NICU stays are hard, you miss some firsts and have to create your own.  You'll get there though.

  • There are all sorts of conflicting things about the cord stumps and baths. Some say you can give full baths and some say just sponge baths. Some say you need to use alcohol on it and others say not to. We used the alcohol swabs and did sponge baths until his fell off around 3.5 weeks. We though his would fall off within a few days because the lights for his jaudice really dried it up. But that sucker stayed and stayed. I know someone who did real baths and no alcohol and her son's fell off at exactly 4w. So we were pretty even.  I'm sure your baby's will fall off soon. ((Hugs))

  • Addie's didn't come off until she was 5+ weeks old and her pedi codorized (sp) it. It was so annoying. We couldn't give her a real bath or do tummy time and I was always afraid it would get caught on things. We were also told no alcohol, so I think that's part of what took so long.
