Do I really need to take my breast pump to the hospital with us? Some of the books / labor bag lists suggest this. I would assume they would have one if I need it.
I've had conflicting experiences with this. At the first hospital I delivered with, they were threatening to keep DD due to her jaundice and said if I wanted to stay and do the kangaroo care or whatever where mom stays but isn't officially checked into the hospital anymore, that I'd have to have DH run out and buy a pump if I wanted to pump. But I later managed to get us all released. At my second hospital, when one of the twins was being fussy the lactation consult brought me a hand pump to use in the room (and keep).
I think in general though if you're in the situation where your kid is in the NICU or something and you have to pump, they have a pump you can use. Either way I'm sure there is a pump somewhere. It just depends on how cooperative they are.
But bottom line, you don't need to bring your pump.

No way. They will have pumps there (really nice ones, hospital grade) if you need one.
While this *should* be true, our nurses wouldn't give me one b/c I have had a reduction and "shouldn't have been wasting their time trying to BF". I'll be taking one this time.
I didn't bring it. However, my hospital does have a follow-up visit with LCs, and I brought it to that visit so they could tell me about how to use it, etc.
You definitely don't NEED to take it. If there was some sort of situation that warranted it (baby in the NICU or something?), your hubby could always run home. Our hospital did not provide pumps, not all do, you could call and check. Really you don't need to pump in the hospital. Assuming you have an average birth, your milk probably won't even be coming in yet until you leave the hospital.
The hospital grade pumps are the best. In fact, DS had to be hospitalized for a few days with whooping cough when he was 5 weeks old and the hospital provided a pump for me to use (I was EP'ing at the time) since I stayed with him. They didn't make me go home and get my own, which was great b/c I was not going to leave my baby!!!
