update to microwaving formula... ped response

just got a call back from our ped office.  spoke to the nurse twice, as line was cut off first time.  she asked a ped (not mine unfortunately) in the office my specific q's as listed in my earlier post.

as long as there are no hotspots, we are OK to microwave bottles!  ped says no worry of ruining nutrients, or of leaching chemicals from the bottle.  she suggested sticking with the defrost setting and always to check temp before feeding baby.

i kind of kept asking the same thing (really wanted to make sure the ped was asked about all my concerns) and then we got cut off.  so when she called me back 10 min later she said she talked to the ped again.  now i'm glad it wasn't our ped... what a pita i am!

i feel liberated... wish i would've done this months ago.  not suggesting anyone else do it, but i feel OK about it now.

Re: update to microwaving formula... ped response

  • I never did understand the 'hot spots' argument. We always nuke our (formula) bottles (just to take the chill off) & shake them like crazy, and we've never had a problem. The BM bottles do not get microwaved, simply because I don't want to lose any of the good nutrients from my BM, but from what I understand, formula does not have the same problem.

Oh well, at least you feel at ease doing what you're doing, now!

  • Didn't see your earlier post but what kind of formula do you have? DH insisted that the hot spots argument made no sense (as long as you shake it afterwards) so we did microwave bottles ... but then a friend pointed out that with Nestle Good Start (the green can) it does say right on the can not to microwave because it does mess with the cultures inside. (And that's something specific a ped wouldn't necessarily know but the manufacturer would.) So hopefully that's not the kind of formula you're using! ;)

amy, LOL, of course this is the formula we are using!!  it's changed to gerber now, but same product.  and our ped was the one who suggested it.  he said that the dha showed beneficial to preemies...  i'm irritated.

will continue what i'm doing and ask my ped in person when we go for 9month check up in a couple weeks.  thank you for the info!

  • I didn't see your earlier post either but as a fellow microwaver (and shaker to get rid of hot spots), I'm glad you feel ok about doing it now. It saves so much time & aggravation, IMO. I never thought about doing it on the defrost setting, interesting. GL!

    Oh no! Sorry. :(

We did love the GoodStart other than that though. We tried a bunch of different formulas and that's the one our boys tolerated the best. And our pedi said it's her favorite formula b/c it has benefits closest to breastmilk compared to other formulas.
