Formula Feeders

When did you switch to medium flow nipples?  What made you think it was time?

We have been using cheap Evenflo bottles for about 6 weeks with no problems.  We switched from Playtex nursers because we couldn't put liners in out bottle warmer.  Lately, when he will start sucking so hard it makes a "pop" noise.  I think maybe he is ready for something a little faster, but I'm also afraid the bottles are just cheap and the nipple is wearing out.

What do you guys think?

Re: Formula Feeders

  • We switched to them about 2 months.  You can always try them, and if you feel he is "drowning", then go back down.  I just felt like Allie was giving up on her bottles because it took too long and she was frustrated.
    Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

  • We havent made the switch because the only kinds we have are fast and slow. Madi will sometimes take a hour to take a 5 oz bottle or like this morning, she downed it in 15 mins. She has made the popping noise, but it isn't all the time. I use Playtex Ventaire's and she does really well with them.

I know this probibaly didn't help. Sorry.

  • We only had slow and fast as well.  He stayed on slow for a long time but it got to where he just started eating faster and it wouldn't take long for him to finish.  I think he started fast flow nipples around 5 months, so I agree with PP that you could probably go ahead and try moving to the medium and if your LO doesn't get the hang of it after a few feedings you can switch back for a while and try again in a couple weeks.
  • We're only just switched to medium a few days ago and Payton is 4 months.  Everytime I tried the medium flow before, she acted like she was drowning and would choke and gasp!

You can try it and believe me, you will know if it's too much!  It does take a day or so for them to get used to it, but there was a huge difference between when we tried last month and when we made the switch this time.  She still had to get used to it, but she didn't act like she was drowning this time.

  • We changed to the level 2 (we use Dr. Brown's) when we had to switch her to the A.R. formula cause it was thicker and she couldn't get it without sucking extremely hard with the level 1's.  So she was about 3 months old when we switched.

I'd try switching, if he seems to be overwhelmed or it's just too much he'll let you know.  You might try switching bottles if the switching nipples don't work though.  Good luck!

  • William is still on the slow flow... I think it's because he was breastfed for so long that he can't deal with the mediums yet
