Depends on if they have no clue, at all, about the culture. Sometimes ignorance is just ignorance with no malice.

As I posted in your thread on 12-24, even though it was so obvious to you, I didn't realize it was faked. Do I think faking a sign like that is insensitive and offensive? Yes. Do I think that if such a sign were to exist for real, it would be internet fodder? Also yes.
Would you be so offended and shocked if it weren't photoshopped and was a real sign?
I only ask because that seemed to be a major point on your 12-24 post and it never crossed my mind that it would be photoshopped until you said something about it (think the "headlines" bit on Jay Leno ...)

Honestly, I didn't even know what the issue was when you posted, as I didn't think it was photoshoped, and didn't even realize there was a stereotype of persons of Asian descent chopping up house cats. It's hard to find something offensive when it needs that much background.

I will say that kinda got me, but I didn't spend much time on it. Although I will forever love the friend rice on my favorite Chineese menu....
Well, exactly. I thought the shop proprietor was just tired of being asked about a lost cat and was not entirely fluent. I didn't realize all the background until I read the links on 12-24.
So no, I didn't find it offensive.I didn't know that "sign generators" even existed let alone would assume that someone was using one on a particular occasion. I have seen menus with incorrect English on them, so why would a sign be any different? Call me naive or gullible for not immediately knowing about such things but to leap to thinking that everyone should automatically know that a particular picture is not real is a bit ridiculous.

Also when I lived in China a lot of the English translations were extremely funny (ie: the sign in the park with a picture of a dog squatting over steaming poo inside the red "do not circle" and the English "translation" said "do not let your animal shiit here") or offensive (translation on a handicapped bathroom "retards bathroom") or a combination of the two (another handicapped bathroom said "old hag bathroom") I have a memory card full of them.
Please clarify - by 'would have commented in another post' do you mean you would have brought it over to 12-24??

If you want to start noting posts for people to read (I will say I didn't see the sign when originally posted or anything else related), try the one entitled "gtky" from earlier today and look at what I do for a living. I didn't say I thought it was funny, I actually thought it was more sad because I assumed that someone was harassing the restaurant owners based on a stereotype. My point, like other posters in here, is that you immediately leapt to certain conclusions and faulted anyone who didn't follow your line of thinking thus making it into a bigger deal than what it needed to be.

For the record, I'm not sure what I think of you... but I think a mountain is being made out of a molehill in this case. If we all took this much offense to every offhand comment or post, well, we'd have to create spin off boards and AE's. And we're too lazy for that.

Papagena, I get it. You like Jenni and not me. Fair enough. But I find this racist, insensitive and offensive, and I will take it everywhere I chose. I am completely flabbergasted that people fail to recognize the rudeness involved in insulting Asians.
I find it repugnant that people defend actions like this, finding humor in xenophobia, or rationalizing it. Someone has to beat a drum that stuff like this isn't okay. If it's my turn today, so be it.

Actually, I had no idea it was a sign generator. If you want to call me biased, you're free to do so. But, I live in a town where a church had a sign that said, "Have you found Jesus? No, he is not missing." so I tend to take things like that at face value. Maybe you should just call me stupid, instead.
