3rd Trimester

When did you/will you start wearing a Maternity/nursing bra?

Last night at prenatal, our nurse was going through all of these different items for the postpartum period - including a nursing bra.

She looked at all of us ladies and said that we shouldn't be wearing underwire bras really anymore (we're all in 3rd tri except for one momma I think) because it can really hinder the development of the milk ducts (which I didn't realize went all the way into your arm pit area).

So...when did you (or will you) switch from your underwire pretty things to the more practical maternity or nursing bras?

Re: When did you/will you start wearing a Maternity/nursing bra?

  • I don't wear underwire ever and thankfully I haven't grown that much yet so I probably wont have to start wearing nursing bras until LO is born.

OH and the weirdest feeling ever- when you get engorged and your armpit feels swollen.

  • I am not wearing the nursing bra's until i am actually nursing, but i did switch to a really soft/not tight sports bra around 30 weeks. i had big boobs before i got pregnant, and they only grew a little so far, but the underwire started to bug me. It's not really that important to switch until you are actually  producing milk. underwire will irritate then and could cause alot of problems; but this is the first time i have actually heard anyone being told to switch. i just did it out of my own comfort needs. lol

    good luck!

  • The nursing bra's I have all have underwire in them. They are from motherhood. I've had nursing bra's since my cup size went up to an E. Now I need new ones, my boobs are getting too big for the E's.

  • When I delivered and was breastfeeding. FYI....I have always worn underwire nursing bras because my boobs get sooo heavy and large while nursing I have to have the support. I have never had a problem or known anyone who did either. I nursed my two girls for 17.5 mos and 14.5 mos respectively. Do what is best for you and take somethings with a grain of salt.
  • I never heard that about underwire.  Some of the nursing bras I have are underwire and I never had a problem.  My LC also never said anything about it.

I also never got a maternity bra.  I did buy a couple bras in a cup size and band size larger at Kohls/Target (not too expensive) and also a band extender.  I wont wear the nursing bras until I am actually nursing.  Buy the nursing bra in the larger size that you are now.

  • I own one non-underwire nursing bra and I HATE it...I have D cups now and I just don't feel like it offers enough support and the sides by my armpits KILL after wearing it all day.  I've been wearing sleep bras since 5 months b/c I leak when I'm sleeping.  All of my regular nursing bras have underwires and I've been wearing them for months now.  When I went up a cup size I just bought nursing bras, so I didn't have to go out and buy even more bras.  I should still have enough room in them when I get engorged after the birth according to the lady who sized me, if not I'll live in the sleep bras for awhile which are the most comfortable anyway.

  • I was told underwire is fine for now, but not to wear one when you're nursing. Something about how it can cause clogged ducts.

I'm not switching until after LO is born.

  • With DD I didn't make the switch until I had her. And I haven't bought any maternity bras just a size larger in my regular bra.

I've heard it can cause problems with your ducts but luckily don't know anyone who experienced it.

  • I bought a nursing bra a couple of weeks ago. I wanted a normal one but the nursing bra was the only one that fit. And it has an underwire. Honestly I have huge boobs and cant imagine not wearing an underwire, so I probably will continue to do that unless I run into problems.
  • After I give birth.

  • If underwires shouldn't be worn when nursing, then why would they still be made?  That being said, I am loving my 2 bravado underwire nursing bras and wear them daily.  I have for the past 3 weeks because they are so comfy.  I had bravados without underwires the first time around and as much as I loved them, I need more support when nursing.  I know plenty of mamas who have worn underwires when nursing and never had a problem with them.

  • I switched around 30 weeks.  I had an underwire that was hurting and hadn't changed size for a while so decided to go ahead and get a few nursing bras.
  • I think I switched to nursing bras as early as 20 weeks, when I didn't fit into my other bras anymore. I don't wear them, but they do make nursing bras with underwires. Not sure why they would do that if they were going to create a problem...

  • I switched to nursing bras back in 2nd tri when my regular bras became to uncomfortable to wear.  I didn't want to waste the money on bras that I would only wear for a little while.
  • I stopped wearing underwire bras at the beginning of 2nd tri...my boobs are obscene already and the underwire felt like it was struggling to keep up.  I have been wearing military issued sports bras since then (I swear they are super comfortable).  I bought some nursing bras from Target but am actually afraid to even try them on because of the massive size of my boobs these days.  They have underwire though, so that's weird.  I will probably wait to wear them until after the baby comes.

The same reason crib bumpers, walkers, and doorway jumpers are made- someone wants them.  (Not saying anything about the bra bc I honestly don't know.)

Did everyone go buy a bra after LO was born?  I've gotten wider but my cup size hasn't changed (STILL.  BOO.)  I wouldn't have a clue what size to get now, but I really don't want to go running out 3 days PP to get them either!

  • sorry - got sidetracked with work! lol silly work

thanks for the responses ladies - lots to think about and great to hear all of your experiences!! I think I may trade in my 40DD underwire soon for something less pretty and more comfy!

  • I switched to nursing bras early about mid-way through 2nd tri just because they were much more comfortable. They are also sans underwire, and I was reluctant at first given that I had only known underwire bras to be the best support for me. I love them now, though, and they don't look too bad and my boobs and my upper back (between my shoulders) feel great at the end of the day when I switch over to a sports bra.
