PSA: Vowels are not interchangable.

You can not mix and match them in order to make a name more unique. It just looks dumb.

Seriously. What did vowels ever do to you? Why do you abuse them so?

LOL. You are cracking me up! For the longest time the worst spelling I'd seen was Kynzi....then one day a member here deposited to her daughter's account...Airika. Yikes.

  • You just made me snarf my water!  I think people should name their babies what they want, but I have to say that I generally agree with you.

I am on the receiving end of this problem, as well: my name is "Jo-Ellen" (pretty straightforward, if you don't mind the hyphen), but many people insist on spelling it "Jo-Ellyn"  when sending me email.  Why the y?  I just don't get it.

  • LOL!  Yes

There are some exceptions (such as Jaime vs Jamie) but most of the time I agree with you.  You-neek spellings just make you look less "edumacated".

  • I tried really hard to remove vowels from Brooke's name but it just doesn't work. I am thinking about naming this one Maulee just to change it up a bit.

  • I agree. There are unique names and then there are names that are just spelled wrong. They are not the same

  • Haha. Like Serah for Sarah kind of thing? Although one thing to note is that depending on the country, vowels can be used differently or vowel sounds and words can be spelled differently. Like "Honor" would be "Honour" in Canada and the UK. Also, "Karen" is usually spelled "Karin" in Scandinavia. I'm just saying that it's not always a case of just trying to be "special", although I'm guessing from your post that the offending name and mix 'n' match vowels is a bit more out there.

But on a post about abusing vowels, this post's title is missing one... sorry, it's hard to resist in a post criticizing others about the misuse of vowels. Just sayin'.

We want to stick with the 6 letter theme! lol

No worries. We have already bought wood letters for Molly. :)  No speshul spellings in this household!

This, again, made me snarf.  Couldn't you have tried "Bruk" with an umlaut?  LOL!

  • My mom told me for years that she wished she'd spelled my name Mollie.  I'm pretty happy she didn't.  I met a girl once spelled Mali, like the country.

  • That, or skipping them all together.  I swear on my life I once saw a "Chrystyna".

     whats wrong with Jordyn?

  • imageMarknCalsMommy:
My mom told me for years that she wished she'd spelled my name Mollie.  I'm pretty happy she didn't.  I met a girl once spelled Mali, like the country.

I went to college with a girl from Hawaii named Mali, which she pronounced like the country (emphasis on "Li").  I later met a girl she went to high school with, who said that everybody called her Molly.  Make up your mind!

As for Jordyn, it is no worse than Jordin, but both are incorrect: the name is Jordan!

Bruk could have been pretty awesome. LOL.

I think some people want to put a 'girly' spin on Jordan and make the 'a' a 'y' or 'i'.

  • I actually like Jordyn a lot. The "y" doesn't bother me that much... We are naming LO Jamie and everyone was telling me I should spell it Jaymee b/c my stepdaughter is Haylee. I said, no thank you...

    other versions that were suggested:

Jaimee, Jaymy, Jaymey, Jamey, Jaemi, Jaimy and about a million more....

We decided that traditional spelling would be a lot easier for her in school and such...
