Babies on the Brain

furniture question

DH and I currently have a hodgepodge of bedroom furniture.  I use the same stuff I've had since I was 7 and DH has an assortment of Ikea stuff for his clothes.  We were thinking we will buy a white crib and put my (white) furniture in the baby's room and buy new stuff for us.

So where do you shop for affordable furniture?

Re: furniture question

  • IKEA and Macy's.

We got a complete Martha Stewart for Bernhardt collection at Macy's for $2,000 I believe.  They have great furniture sales.

I had IKEA before that.  The only reason I got rid of the IKEA furniture was because when DH and I got married we wanted a Queen size bed rather than a full.  Oh, and DH didn't like the IKEA mattresses.

Ooh, I forgot about Macys.  I should look there since we have about $500 of unsecured debt (cough, gift cards) from them leftover from the wedding.

  • We're struggling to find furniture we like and that won't take forever to be delivered for the new house, and I think we're hitting IKEA this weekend. They do have a lot of stuff that I like and it's definitely affordable.
  • The only thing from Ikea that I love is our dining set.  The bedroom stuff we once had didn't hold up at all.

We have some stuff from the Crate and Barrel Ready to Assemble line (it's  a little cheaper than the regular stuff) that we like and is holding up very well.  Our reasonably priced bedroom furniture from a local place is falling apart and is going to have to be replaced, so I wouldn't call it reasonably priced anymore.

They key at Macy's is to find the sale furniture.  That Martha Stewart collection we have was originally close to $4,000 but it was being discontinued.

Also, if you have a Macy's outlet I hear they have great stuff too.

    I love Macy's.

  • Do you have a Bob's discount furniture near you?

  • I like to go to IKEA and also outlet stores you may be able to find something you like at a good price.

*Also I think Pottery Barn just came out with a line of affordable furniture that from what I saw looks pretty nice.

  • We got our bedroom and living room furniture here at Just Cabinets (which, oddly enough, does not sell just cabinets) and I like it a lot so far (we got it 3 years ago).  It's holding up great and was really reasonable.  There is one south of Baltimore (I forget exactly where) but we ordered it and they delivered and set it all up for us.

ETA: we have this set, plus an extra nightstand and the tall dresser.

  • I second Macy's when things are on sale. I don't know if you have Bassett furniture there but we bought our bedroom set there. They have fabulous sales and I love our furniture and it has held up great so far (the oldest  piece we have is our bed and it is 3 years old).
